mi sono piaciuti talmente tanto i miei scaldamuscoli fatti da un maglione vecchio (idea da questo tutorial)che non ho resistito a farne un altro paio. e temo di voler farne ancora, sono così facili da fare e così comodi.
i loved my legwarmers made from an old sweater (idea from this tutorial) so much that i just couldn't resist making another pair. and i'm afraid that i want to make more, too, they're so easy to make and so comfy.

ho avuto un po' di difficoltà a fare le foto. mio marito non c'era quindi le ho fatte da sola, solo che è stato un po' complicato con la confusione in casa (nessuna parete libera da fare da sfondo) e con il piccolo che voleva a tutti i costi esserci nelle foto anche lui!
i had some issues taking photos. my husband wasn't home so i took them myself, except it was a bit complicated with all the mess in our place (no free walls for background) and the little guy who insisted on being in the pictures too!

vi ricordate di questo post sulle acquarelle da viaggio nella scatolina di latta degli altoids? ho parlato delle fantastix, una specie di pennello che si riempie d'acqua in modo che si può usare in giro senza portare a presso l'acqua per fare acquarelle. nel post ho scritto che non riuscivo ad usare bene 'ste fantastix. ho portato tutto questo kit con me il primo giorno che ho partecipato con mia figlia ad uno dei laboratori di disegno dell'artista caroline peyron al museo di capodimonte a napoli. e ho trovato che non è stata solo una impressione; non funzionano proprio per le acquarelle perché non si riempiono per niente di acqua, neanche quando lasciato tutta la notte immersi nell'acqua. managgia.

remember this post about the travel watercolor kit in the altoids tin? i mentioned fantastix, a sort of paintbrush that can be filled with water so that you can carry them with you to do watercolors without having to bring water, too. in the post i wrote that i couldn't figure out how to use the dang things. i brought the kit with me the first day that my daughter and i participated in one of the drawing workshops held by the artist caroline peyron in the museo di capodimonte in naples. and i found that it wasn't just a wrong impression; they don't work at all for watercolors because they don't fill up at all with water, even when left overnight in it. doh!

invece ho scoperto che esistono altri pennelli ad acqua con un serbatoio di plastica che si riempie davvero con l'acqua. si può regolare abbastanza facilmente il flusso dell'acqua e le abbiamo portato con noi per tutti gli altri giorni di laboratio al museo e ci hanno permesso di lavorare molto meglio! quindi, se avete intenzione di portare le acquarelle in giro, prendete questi pennelli, non le fantastix!!

then i discovered that there are another type of travel paintbrushes with a plastic part that actually can be filled up with water. you can regulate the flow of the water and we brought them with us for the other days of the workshop and they let us work much better! therefore, if you have any intention of watercoloring out and about, get these paintbrushes, not fantastix!!

qualche mese fa ho visto questo post di creare scout su come fare candele con delle conchiglie dentro. questo blog propone tante idee su attività da fare con i bimbi, anche se questa non un buon esempio perché si deve riscaldare il gel per candele. ma l'idea è che i bimbi raccolgono tante conchiglie e possono scegliere quali mettere.

a few months ago i saw this post by creare scout on how to make candles with shells inside. this blog has all sorts of ideas on activities to do with kids, although this one really isn't the best example because you have to heat up the candle gel. but the idea is that the kids collect shells and can choose which ones to put in.

mi è piaciuta subito l'idea perché mia figlia ha una bella collezione di conchiglie raccolte dalla spiaggia e ho deciso di farlo con lei per regali da parte sua per i suoi insegnanti e la famiglia. non avendo barattoli belli da usare, ho deciso di comprare bicchieri di due soldi da ikea. purtroppo il gel per candele l'ho dovuto ordinare da internet e costicchia non poco. e poi la confezione che ho ordinato è risultata molto più piccola di quello che aspettavo, quindi alla fine abbiamo fatto solo 3 candele per la famiglia.

i liked the idea right away because my daughter has a huge collection of shells that she's picked up from the beach and i decided to make these with her for gifts from her for her teachers and the family. i didn't have any cool jars to use, so i decided to buy some cheap ikea glasses. unfortunately i had to order the candle gel wax online and it wasn't cheap. and then the container i ordered ended up being a lot smaller than what i'd expected, so in the end we only made 3 candles for family gifts.

a sofia è piaciuto molto scegliere le conchiglie, e forse abbiamo un po' esaggerato (mi sa che ci sono più conchiglie che cera!). ho trovato la tecnica di scogliere e versare il gel (a strati) e inserire le conchiglie molto più problematica che aspettavo. diverse volte ho trovato pozzanghere di gel sul tavolo di cucina (che per fortuna si toglie facilmente dopo che si raffredda un poco) e il poco di gel che è scappato dentro la pentola che ho usato per scoglierlo è stato quasi impossibile da pulire. poi evidentemente non ho aspettato abbastanza che il gel si raffreddasse per inserire le conchiglie perché scendevano tutte quante al fondo di quello strato.

sofia really liked picking out the shells, though we may have overdid it a bit (i think there are more shells than wax!). i found the technique of melting and pouring the gel (in layers) and inserting the shells much more problematic than i'd expected. more than once i realized that there was a big gel puddle on the kitchen table (which luckily comes off easily once it cools down) and the little bit of gel that got into the pot i used to melt it was almost impossible to clean. then i apparently didn't wait long enough for the gel to cool before putting the shells in because they sunk down to the bottom of each layer.

forse l'ho trovato complicato perché era la prima volta che cercavo di fare candele e non sapevo che cosa stessi facendo! ad esempio, non sapevo come tenere diritto lo stoppino mentre si raffreddava il gel cera, quindi ho usato un coltello da cucina per tenerlo fermo. sicuramente ci sarà qualche altro modo più intelligente...

perhaps it was so complicated because it was the first time i'd tried to make candles and i didn't know what in the world i was doing! for example, i didn't know how to keep the wick up straight while the wax gel cooled down, so i used a kitchen knife to keep it up. there must be some other more intelligent way to do that...

non dico tutto questo per scoraggiarvi. anzi! sicuramente sarete meno imbranati di me e forse non avrete un piccolo bimbo che cerca di tirare giù tutte le cose dal tavolo come me! e poi ho imparato una cosa molto fortunata quando il piccolino ha afferrato una candela e l'ha buttato per terra: anche se normalmente i bicchieri ikea si rompono solo se li guardi, quando sono pieni di gel cera e conchiglie, non si rompono mai! :)

i'm not saying this to discourage you. not at all! i'm sure that you're much less of a bumbler than i am and perhaps you don't have a little boy trying to pull all the things off the table, either. but i did learn something very lucky when the little guy grabbed a candle and threw it on the ground: even though ikea glasses normally break just if you look at them wrong, they never break when full of wax gel and shells! :)

la prima settimana del 2012 ha avuto una bella sorpresa per me...ho avuto l'opportunità di conoscere di persona cristina di ork'idea atelier e rachele di arteteca, due blogger italiane che stimo molto per le loro attività creative con materiali di recupero. che dire, è stato molto bello poterle conoscere, le persone dietro le figure virtuali!

the first week of 2012 has a nice surprise for me...i had the opportunity to meet cristina from ork'idea atelier and rachele from arteteca, two italian bloggers that i just love for their creative use of recuperated materials. what can i say...it was so cool to be able to meet them in person and get to know them a little, to meet the real people behind the virtual personas!

ho visto recentemente dal blog di pat che c'è una iniziativa interessante da dove conviene che pianta degli alberi in modo di neutralizzare l'impronta di co2 di blog. basta seguire 3 passi semplici e piantano un albero per te, il quale neutralizza la tua produzione di anidride carbonica per 50 anni. fantastico!

i recently saw on pat's blog that there's an interesting initiative by dove conviene that plants trees so as to neutralize the co2 footprint of blogs. all you have to do is follow 3 simple steps and they'll plant a tree for you which will neutralize your production of carbon dioxide for 50 years. yah!

calzini, seconda parte - socks, part 2

vi ricordate di questi calzini? ecco la fine che ha fatto il secondo paio: scaldamuscoli bimbi. l'idea mi è venuta vedendo questi due post: quello di equazioni in italiano e quello di make it and love it in inglese. nel secondo di questi c'era un link al tutorial che ho usato alla fine, anche se l'unica differenza è quella di stringere un po' la parte del piede del calzino, che diventa la parte in alta del scaldamuscolo.

remember these socks? here's what i made out of the second pair: kid leg warmers. i got the idea from two posts: equazioni's in italian and make it and love it's in english. in the second post there is a link to the tutorial that i used in the end, even if the only real difference is that the foot part of the sock, which becomes the top of the leg warmer, is made less wide before sewing on.

in teoria li ho fatti per mio figlio, che ha compiuto un anno un paio di settimane fa, da usare come baby legs, cioè scalda gambe per bebè. l'idea è che sono più facili dei pantaloni perché non si devono togliere per il cambio del pannolino e proteggono le gambe quando il piccolo impara a gattonare. ma visto che fa troppo freddo per usarli senza niente altro nella parte di sotto, li sto usando sopra i pantaloni quando usciamo.

in theory i made them for my little guy who just turned one a couple of weeks ago, to use as baby legs, basically baby leg warmers. the idea is that they're easier than pants because you don't have to take them off for diaper changes and they protect baby's legs when he's learning to crawl. but seeing as it's a tad cold to use them without anything underneath, i'm using them over pants when we go out.

e poi mi sono resa conto che vanno anche benissimo come scaldamuscoli per mia figlia di 5 anni. le piacciono tanto e poi mi ha confessato che a scuola sente spesso freddo alle gambe, quindi mi sa che dovrò confezionare altre paia di queste cose.

and then i realized that they would also be perfect as regular leg warmers for my 5-year-old girl. she loves them and then admitted that her legs are often cold at school, so i guess i will be making more of these for her.

e mica potevo restare fuori da questa mania dei scaldamuscoli, quindi ne ho fatto un paio anch'io da questa maglietta scaldacuore di un tessuto che mi piace molto ma che mi andava troppo piccola.

and of course i couldn't leave myself out of this leg warmer mania, so i made a pair for myself too from this cross-over sweater that was too small for me but in a fabric that i really like.

avevo visto diversi tutorial per farli dai maglioni. c'era questo che è molto semplice, ma non porto mai i tacchi quindi la forma non mi sembrava giusta per me. poi c'era questo di megan nielsen (che ha fatto il cartamodello del top di gravidanza).

i'd seen different tutorials for making them out of sweaters. there's this one which is quite simple, but i never wear heels so i didn't think the shape would be right for me. then there's this one from megan nielsen (who also made the maternity wrap top pattern).

ma quello che mi piaceva di più da fireflies and jellybeans fa uso del bordo inferiore del maglione per fare un bordo superiore che si piega in giù. e ho anche copiato l'idea di metterci i bottoni. sono carini e riscaldano molto sia sopra i leggings (come nella foto) o collant (o anche i pantaloni stretti, in teoria, ma io non li porto) o sotto i pantaloni normali (cioè, non stretti). questa è forse l'unica cosa della moda anni '80 (che è tornata tanto di moda ora, non si capisce perché!) che mi piace e poi è anche utile...sicuramente più utile dei capelli cotonati!

but the one that i liked the most from fireflies and jellybeans uses the sweater's bottom hem as a top edge that folds down. and i also copied the idea of sewing on buttons. they're so cute and they really do keep in extra warmth over leggings (as in this photo) or tights (or also tight pants, in theory, but i don't wear them) or under normal pants (that is, ones that aren't tight). this just might be the only thing from 80's style (which has come back into fashion, who knows why!) that i actually like and it's also something useful...much more so than teased hair!

calzini, prima parte - socks, part 1

ho già parlato del mio dilemma dei calzini e perché ne ho una montagna da usare in un modo o un altro. avevo già fatto due progetti usando i calzini: il mostro gioccatolo e il vaso. avevo anche questi calzini, un po' usati e più lunghi. ma sempre di un poliestere che trovo fastidioso sotto i piedi (e che fa sudare...ewww!). chiaramente non li ho buttati! ecco la prima soluzione:

i've already written about my sock dilemma and why i have a bunch of them to use in some way or another. i'd already done two projects using socks: the monster toy and the pot. i also had these socks, a bit used and longer than the others. but still the same poliester that i find so annoying under my feet (and that makes my feet sweat...ewww!). obviously i didn't throw them out! here's the first solution:

scaldamani! sono fantastici da usare quando sto molto al computer e si raffreddano le dita. e poi sono del mio colore preferito e a strisce. e gratis. perfetto!

arm/hand warmers! they're just great to use when i'm at the computer for a long time and my fingers get cold. and then they're my favoite color and striped. and free. perfect!

prima ho fatto i tagli. ho solo tolto un pezzetto dal tallone e poi la punta. erano comodi, ma lo spazio per il pollice un po' troppo largo.

first i made my cuts. i just took out a little piece of the heel and then the tip of the toe. they were comfortable, but the thumb space was a bit too wide.

quindi ho chiuso un po' le aperture per i pollici con il filo da ricamo dello stesso colore del calzino. sembravano un po' troppo trasandati lasciati così, quindi ho anche fatto il punto spino intorno alle parti tagliate.

so i closed up the thumb openings a bit with embroidery thread of the same color as the sock. they looked a bit too messy just left like that, so i also did a blanket stitch around the cut edges.

molto meglio! vai!!

much better! yah!!

sì, mi rendo conto di essere di nuovo molto poco presente con il blog. ho da qualche settimana un nuovo lavoro e mi toglie più tempo di quello che ho a disposizione. sto ancora cercando di trovare un equilibrio per fare il più possibile di quello che devo fare (e un pochino pochino di quello che voglio fare per non deprimermi troppo!)

yes, i realize that once again i've been a bit absent from the blog. i just started a new job a few weeks ago and it's eating up even more time than i have available in the first place. i'm still trying to find a balance to do the most possible of what i have to do (and a tiny bit of what i want to do so as not to get too down on myself!)

e sì, mi rendo conto anche di non aver fatto gli auguri sul blog. fatto è che stavo a letto il 25 e il 26 con una febbre alta e ero in uno stato un po' confusionale. quindi vorrei salutarvi, anche se un po' in ritardo, e augurare a tutti le feste e l'anno nuovo sereni con questo disegno che ha fatto mia figlia del presepe (insieme a delle persone nella nave spaziale) su una tovaglia di carta di una pizzeria. un abbraccio! :) lisa

what can i say...what a nice surprise i found in my inbox this morning. one of (italian) groupon's offers today is for a menstrual cup! i already have one, so i'm not buying it, but i'm so glad that something so rarely used and a bit taboo, but so wonderful is getting this type of visibility today!

mostro-calzino - sock monster

io non sopporto il poliestere. e lo sopporto ancora di meno sui piedi. sono stata recentemente fregata al mercato nella mia città. non ero proprio convinta che si trattassero di calzini 100% al cotone, ma li ho comprati lo stesso. che ingenua che sono. quindi ho questa bella collezione di calzini nuovi che non mi piacciono. (ho anche una bella collezione di calzini usati da riutilizzare, ma ne scrivo un'altra volta.) per fortuna, avevo già delle idee su che cosa farne, quindi non sono rimasta troppo male. vorrò fare un serpente giocattolo da diversi calzini. e volevo fare questi mostri. e chissà, forse ne farò un'altro di questi vasi. per prima ho fatto questo simpaticone:.

i really can't stand polyester. even less on my feet. i was recently ripped off at the market in my town. i wasn't really convinced that they were 100% cotton socks, but i bought them anyway. how naive. so now i have this nice collection of new socks that i don't like. (i also have a nice collection of used socks to recuperate, but i'll write about those another time.) luckily, i already had some ideas of what to do with them, so i wasn't too bummed about it. i wanted to make a snake stuffed toy from quite a few of the socks. and i knew i wanted to make these monsters. and, who knows, maybe i'll make another of these pots. first off, i made this little guy:

ho seguito le istruzioni alla parola a parte due fatti. (e riguardando il post originale, vedo che ho anche fotografato il mio mostriciattolo davanti ad una porta con la pittura che si scrosta, che vi assicuro che si tratta solo di una coincidenza...o forse il mio subconscio che si ricordava molto bene la foto originale, chissà....) 1. ho piegato la parte in basso del mostro verso l'interno prima di cucire perché non mi piaceva esposta. e 2. ci ho messo dentro un sonaglio fai-da-te.

i followed the instructions exactly except two things. (and looking at the original post, i now see that i too photographed my little monster in front of a door with peeling paint, which i assure you is a total coincidence...or perhaps my subconscious that remembered the original photo very well, who knows....) 1. i folded the bottom part of the monster inwards before sewing because i didn't like it sticking out. and 2. i put a handmade rattle inside.

per fare il sonaglio, ho messo un po' di riso dentro un ovetto di kinder (che ho usato anche per il mio calendario dell'avvento). oh, e ora che ci penso, c'era una terza deviazione: non ho usato i bottoni per gli occhi, anche se mi piacciono molto così, perché il mio piccolo mette tutto in bocca e sarà stato pericoloso.

to make the rattle, i put some rice inside a kinder surprise egg (which i also used for my advent calendar). oh, and now that i think about it, there's a third deviation: i didn't use buttons for the eyes, even though i like them that way, because my little guy puts everything in his mouth and it would've been dangerous.

invece ho cucito (piuttosto male, aggiungo, ma l'ho fatto di fretta la notte prima di regalarlo, quindi non ero particolarmente esigente) dei pezzi di pile per gli occhi e anche per un paio di denti dopo che mio marito mi ha detto che non si capiva che quella cosa in mezzo fosse una bocca. secondo me era evidente, ma mi piace di più con i dentini.

instead i sewed (and pretty badly, i might add, but i did it in a rush the night before giving it away, so i wasn't particularly picky) some scraps of fleece on for eyes and also a couple of teeth after my husband said that you couldn't tell that the thing in the middle was a mouth. i think it was pretty obvious, but i do like it a lot more with the teeth.

ed ecco il destinatario: il mio nicky (con un bel livido in fronte) che l'ha ricevuto come regalo per l'onomastico. mi piacerebbe dire che gli è piaciuto molto, ma non posso. all'inizio l'ha lanciato un paio di volte, ha fatto due risate, e poi sua sorella l'ha preso per se. va be', almeno piace a qualcuno!

and here's the recipient: my nicky (with a nice bruise on his forehead) who got it for a saint's day gift (in catholic countries, this day is celebrated pretty often). i'd like to say that he really liked it, but i can't. at first he threw it a couple of times, then laughed a bit, and then his sister took it over. oh well, at least someone is enjoying it!

dicembre - december

e stiamo di nuovo a dicembre. siccome l'anno scorso si è rotto uno degli ovetti del nostro calendario dell'avvento (fatto a mano completamente da materiali recuperati, ovviamente!), ne abbiamo fatto uno nuovo. in teoria dovrebbe essere il nostro nicky perché abbiamo già gli ovetti di "sofia", "mamma" e "papà", ma la verità è che assomiglia un po' troppo ad un robot. pazienza....

and here we are again in december. seeing as one of the eggs from our advent calendar (handmade completely from upcycled materials, obviously!) broke last year, we made a new one. in theory it's supposed to be little nicky because we already have eggs decorated as "sofia," "mamma" and "daddy," although it really looks a bit too much like a robot. oh well....

negli anni scorsi, mettevo sempre qualche piccola caramella o gioccattolino ogni giorno. poi mi è capitato di vedere questo post di equazioni, dove si sono posti la domanda: che cosa metterci dentro se non caramelle? a parte le idee di francesca e davide, alcuni lettori hanno lasciato dei commenti con delle idee molto interessanti. ma quella che mi è piaciuto di più è stata di proporre qualche tipo di attività da fare insieme ogni giorno.

in past years, i've always put some little candy or toy in every day. then i happened to see this post on equazioni, where they asked: what should we put inside if not candy? besides the ideas that francesca and davide wrote in the post, some readers left comments with some very interesting ideas, but the one that i liked the most was to propose some sort of activity to do together every day.

avendo sempre molto poco tempo, non ci riesco ogni giorno, ma ci provo. ad esempio, un giorno ho messo una carta di cupcakes nell'ovetto e sofia ha capito subito che voleva dire che avremmo fatto insieme i cupcakes. un altro giorno ho messo un pezzo del presepe e si è emozionata tanto che avremmo tolto il presepe dalla scatola e l'avremmo messo fuori dove ci può giocare. altri giorni, invece, metto un foglietto con una mappa e deve trovare una cosa nascosta, che le fa sempre divertire molto. certo, è più faticosa ogni sera pensare in che cosa proporre per il giorno seguente, ma vale assolutamente la pena di vederla divertire!

not having a whole lot of extra time, i can't do it every day, but i try. for example, one day i put a cupcake liner inside the egg and sofia figured it right out that it meant we would make cupcakes together. another day i put a piece of the nativity scene inside and she was thrilled that we would take out the whole nativity scene together and put it up so she could then play with the pieces. other days i put a little map inside and she has to find something that's hidden, which is always good fun for her. sure, it takes a lot more effort on my part every evening to think of something to propose for the next day, but it's all worth it to see how much fun she has!

non ho molto tempo da dedicare alle cose mie, neanche se si trattano di regali di natale. per fortuna ho trovato il modo di ricavare un pochino di tempo per creare con i ferri. quando esco la mattina con il piccolo, si addormenta quasi sempre nel passeggino. visto che abitiamo nel 3° piano senza ascensore, non lo posso portare dentro casa nel passegino, si sveglia quando lo estraggo e non si riaddormenta più. quindi ho cominciato a portare i ferri con me in modo che posso restare giù nel cortile seduta al sole a lavorare mentre lui dorme ancora. non posso lavorare su progetti complicati perché non sono molto brava ancora con i ferri e devo continuamente consultare i libri su come fare.

these days i have precious little time to spend on my own things, even if they're christmas gifts. luckily i've found a way to snatch a bit of time to knit. when i go out in the morning with the little guy, he almost always falls asleep in the stroller. seeing as we live on the 3rd (or 4th, depending how you count it) floor without an elevator, i can't bring him in still sleeping in the stroller, he always wakes up when i take him out and he never falls back asleep. so i've started bringing my knitting needles with me so i can stay outside in our courtyard to sit in the sun and knit while he continues to sleep away. i can't work on anything complicated because i'm not very proficient in knitting and i always need to consult books for more tricky things.

so i decided to try some of the nifty novelty yarn that the shop near my home now sells. i started with the one called "farfalla," or butterfly. basically you just knit by inserting the needles in the holes in the top row and the rest flows down into the ruffle. at first it was pretty complicated and time-consuming for me, but pretty soon i got used to it and managed to work quickly.

look, it's our new camera! hmmm, perhaps i need to clean that mirror a little better. so after three scarves i decided to change yarn because i was getting a bit sick of that type. now i'm working with mondial brand volant yarn. i've only done a few rows so far, so it's still very slow going. we'll see how it goes!

tappetini 100% recuperati / 100% upcycled rugs

non so di voi, ma noi sporchiamo i tappetini del bagno in continuazione. si erano distrutti quelli che ho comprato tempo fa al mercato (e comunque non li sopportavo) e quindi mi era rimasto solo il tappetino che ho fatto ai ferri con 13 magliette vecchie. quindi sono finalmente riuscita a trovare il tempo per creare dei tappetini nuovi dagli asciugamani e lenzuola vecchi, come ho visto tempo fa nel libro handmade home (un altro progetto che ho fatto da questo libro si trova qui).

i don't know about you, but we get our bathrugs filthy constantly. the ones that i'd gotten at the market a while back were falling apart (and i never could stand them in the first place) so all i had left was the rug i knitted out of 13 old t-shirts. so i finally managed to find the time to make new rugs out of old towels and sheets, as i saw a while ago in the book handmade home (another of the projects in this book you can see here).

non scrivo un tutorial perché già si trova nel libro. ma praticamente si tratta di un asciugamano in basso, il lenzuolo sopra e strisce di asciugamano applicate sopra il lenzuolo. e mi raccommando: si deve usare un ago di almeno 100, se non di più, per passare attraverso tutti gli strati.

i'm not writing a tutorial because it's already in the book. but basically it's just a towel at the bottom, the sheet on top and strips of towel sewn on top of the sheet. and beware: use a machine needle of at least 100 in order to get through all the layers.

il primo tappetino ho fatto come consigliato nel libro a parte un dettaglio. visto che il mio asciugamano era piuttosto consumato, ho messo un altro strato di asciugamano. non lo consiglio perché diventa troppo ingombrante quando si deve fare l'impunatura, ma anche lo strato di lenzuolo non rimane tanto piatto sopra. o almeno non in quello che ho fatto io. guardate la foto all'inizio del post. vedete quell'effetto onda? sì, certo, quella foto ho fatto dopo averlo lavato e non stirato, ma era più o meno così anche prima. (non ho fatto la foto prima per la solita scusa che la mia macchina fotografica era rotta, ma ora ne abbiamo una nuova!)

i did my first rug as the book instructed except for one thing. seeing as my towel was very worn and thin, i put another layer of towel between it and the sheet. i wouldn't advise doing this because it was way too thick for turning and topstitching but also because the towel on top wasn't laying flat very well. or at least not in mine. look at the picture at the beginning of this post. see that wave effect? sure, i took that picture after washing it and not ironing it, but it was already more or less like that before, too. (i didn't take the picture before washing for the same old reason that my camera was broken, but now we have a new one!)

il secondo ho fatto nello stesso modo, ma senza lo strato in più. molto meglio! ho avuto più difficoltà con queste strisce perché odio tanto quei fenicotteri dell'asciugamano e non volevo che si vedevano.

the second i did the same way, but without the extra towel layer. much better! i had a harder time with these strips because i couldn't stand the flamingos in the original towel and i didn't want them to be so visible.

and for the third i decided to try some other shapes, in this case, circles.

a me piace l'effetto sporco dei linee e cerchi irregolari e li ho fatti così apposta (sembra strano, ma sarebbe stato più facile farli regolari, tagliando con la rotella). le strisce si applicano con una semplice impuntura, senza girare i bordi sotto. mi preoccupavo che, con il lavaggio, si sarebbero disfatti troppo, ma per fortuna non è stato il caso. guardate qui:

i really like the messy effect of the irregular lines and circles and i did them that way on purpose (it might seem strange, but it actually would've been easier to make them regular, with a rotary cutter). the strips are just topstitched, without any turning or protecting the edges. i was worried that they would fray beyond repair after washing but, luckily, that was just not the case! see here:

ne vorrei fare altri di questi tappetini, ma con forme diverse applicate sopra. sto togliendo da mezzo una quantità incredibile di asciugamani consumati. mio marito mi ha chiesto che penso di fare con tutti questi tappetini che voglio fare. io dico: servono sempre! e per quei altri tappetini vecchi che non sopportavo? ho già programmato che farne! i want to make more of these rugs, but with different shapes sewn on top. i've already put aside a massive amount of worn-out towels. my husband asked me what in the world i'm going to do with all these bathroom rugs that i want to make. i say: you can never have enough! and as for those other old rugs that i couldn't stand? i've already planned what to do with them! (what, you didn't expect me to throw them out, did you?!)

domani è l'ultimo giorno della settimana europea per la riduzione dei rifiuti. volevo tanto fare un'azione ma, come sempre, non ce l'ho fatto. forse l'anno prossimo. mi consolo pensando che facciamo quello che possiamo non solo in questa settimana, ma ogni giorno, riciclando e recuperando il possibile invece di buttare (e cercando di creare i meno rifiuti possibile prima di dover decidere che fare con quello che rimane). sono proprio contenta che mia figlia si è appassionata anche lei a fare così. guardate che cosa ha creato per l'onomastico del suo nonno. ha fatto tutto da sè, che carina!

tomorrow is the last day of the european week for waste reduction. i really wanted to do something for it but, as always, i just couldn't get around to it. maybe next year. i make myself feel better thinking that we already do what we can not just this week, but every day, recycling and recuperating whatever we can instead of throwing it out (and trying to create as little waste as possible to begin with). i'm really happy that my little girl has become very passionate about doing this, too. just look what she made for her grandfather's saint's day. she did it all by herself, what a sweetie!

so let's talk about christmas gifts! in my opinion, the best choice is to make them yourself. i'm making a few, even though i can't take any pictures of them to show you. (grrrr!!!) second choice, in case of manual incompetence or lack of time, would be to buy handmade gifts. as alessia from alessia, scrap & craft says, "Choosing a handmade gift shows sincere caring and wins compared to any other anonymous or mass produced gift. the pleasure of receiving and giving unique handmade gifts is priceless and preferring italian artists and artisans helps move the micro-economy of our country. this christmas think about this and choose gifts made with hands and heart, instead of with machines." wise words, right? though you could substitute "italian" for whatever area you are in.

e per me, ancora meglio sarebbe fatto a mano con materiali recuperati. basta fare una ricerca su etsy (preferbilmente nella tua zona geografica) su "repurposed" o "recycled", ad esempio, e...mamma mia, quante cose bellissime!

and for me, even better would be handmade with upcycled materials. all you need to do is do a search on etsy (preferibly in your own geographical area) for "repurposed" or "recycled," for example, and...gracious, how many gorgeous things!

i've also been slightly obsessive lately over records. i really like these earrings made from old records and these earrings shaped like records made from recycled paper that i saw at the "corto circuito" market at lake avernus.

un alternativa ai regali fatti a mano sono i libri. recentemente ho scoperto diversi libri per bambini molto interessanti perché stimolano la creatività. l'anno scorso un'amica ha regalato questo libro a mia figlia ed è ancora una preferita a casa nostra. si disegna intorno alla mano in modi diversi e si trasforma la sagoma in diversi animali. (l'originale in inglese sarebbe questo.) non c'è bisogno di sapere leggere perché le istruzioni disegnati sono molto chiari.

an alternative to handmade gifts are books. i've recently discovered a few books for kids that are very interesting because they stimulate their creativity. last year a friend gave this book to my daughter and it's still a favorite in our home. you trace around your hand in different ways and transform the shape into different animals. (the original in english is this.) you don't need to be able to read because the drawn instructions are very clear.

un'altro regalo molto apprezzato è stato questo libro qui (che non sono riuscita a trovare in italiano). si fanno le impronte digitali con l'inchiostro e si fanno diventare personcine, animali, ecc con brillantini e il pennarello in delle scene disegnate. neanche per questo libro è necessario saper leggere.

another much appreciated gift was this book here (which i haven't been able to find in italian). you make fingerprints with the ink and make different people, animals, etc out of them with glitter glue, sequins and marker in the pre-printed scenes. you don't need to read to use this book either.

e in fine, la linea di libri scarabocchi. questo libro per ragazze è stato regalato a mia figlia, ma ci sono tante versioni diversi, tipo per ragazzi, dinosauri, al telefono, ecc. (qui c'è l'originale in inglese) ci sono delle scene che si devono completare. ci piace questo libro, ma sarebbe meglio per bimbi che possono leggere le indicazioni in ogni pagina. mia figlia si scoccia di non poterlo fare per conto suo senza chiedermi che c'è scritto.

and lastly, the line of doodle books. this book for girls was given to my daughter, but there are all sorts of versions, for boys, dinosaurs, on the telephone, etc. (here is the original in english) there are bunches of scenes that you need to complete. we like this book, but it's better for kids who can read the directions on every page. my daughter doesn't like that she can't do it on her own without asking me what's written.

un'amica mi ha segnalato un cd per bimbi da un gruppo che mi piace. normalmente non sopporto più di tanto la musica per bambini perché spesso la trovo "stupida" e troppo semplice. non capisco perché uno deve pensare che i piccoli non sono in grado di apprezzare la musica più complessa. non ho sentito questo disco, ma lo voglio ordinare. si possono sentire delle parti dei brani qui su amazon americano e mi sembrano molto interessanti, divertenti ma intelligenti.

a friend told me about this cd for kids by a group that i like. normally i am not a fan of kids music because i often find it "dumbed down" and too simple. i don't understand why we should think that kids aren't capable of appreciating more complex music. i still haven't heard this cd, but i want to order it. you can hear excerpts from the tracks here on american amazon and they seem very interesting, fun but also intelligent.

la nostra macchina fotografica digitale è rotta da un paio di settimane. l'abbiamo portato ad aggiustare e quando finalmente è stata aggiustata, abbiamo scoperto che chi ha riparato l'obbiettivo avrà rotto invece un'altra parte. l'ho riportata per farla riaggiustare e hanno cercato di convincermi che non era rotta. certo, abbiamo 6 o 7 macchine fotografiche per pellicole (la mia prima gravidanza ha messo fine alla mia passione della fotografia bianco/nero, visto che non potevo più usare tutti quegli acidi), ma non mi aiuta molto con il blog. quindi devo parlare di altro, senza foto. cioè, senza foto mie. rubo dagli altri oggi! (infatti, secondo me, state leggendo per sapere che sono quei biscotti meravigliosi là sopra. dovrete leggere ancora per sapere, mi dispiace!)

our digital camera broke a couple of weeks ago. we brought it to get fixed and when it finally was ready, we discovered that whoever fixed the lens apparently broke another part while doing it. i brought it back to re-fix it and they tried to convince me that it wasn't actually broken. we do have 6 or 7 film SLR cameras (my first pregnancy put an end to my passion of black/white photography, seeing as i couldn't use all the chemicals anymore), but they don't really help me much with the blog. so i need to talk about other stuff, without photos. or rather, without my own photos. i'm stealing from other people! (and i'm willing to bet that you're reading this to find out something about those scrumptious-looking cookies up there. you're just going to have to keep reading, sorry!)

la cucina!! ora che è arrivato il tempo più fresco, ho molta voglia di dolci. vorrei fare delle crostate con le decine di marmellate fatte in casa che devo finire (limone-zenzero, prugne, mela cotogna, tutte fatte da me. e albibocca fatta da altri.) poi abbiamo una quantità assurda di nocciole, sempre regalateci da amici. mio suocero si è offerto ad insegnarmi a fare il torrone con le nocciole e lo zucchero. e vorrei farne altro torrone con il cioccolato. qualcuno ha una ricetta buona? e cavolo, ho gli ingredienti per queste barette di albicocche secche e per questi biscotti miei preferiti dalle ragazze scout (negli USA vendono i biscotti particolari per raccogliere soldi per le loro attività. lo fanno anche qui in italia?) da tanto tempo che forse si saranno scaduti. certo, in questa nuova era della mia vita (con sempre lo stesso suddetto bimbo) non cucino quasi mai a parte il suo cibo. faccio quasi tutta la pappa sua io (a parte gli omogenizzati di carne, che usiamo comunque poco, perché sinceramente mi fa schifo toccare la carne cruda e visto che già faccio fatica a fare il resto delle pappe, preferisco prendere quello bio in barattolo e non pensarci più), facendo grande quantità di ogni ingrediente e congelandoli nel modo dettagliato nel libro super baby food.

cooking!! now that it's cooler out, i always want to eat sweet stuff. i want to make tarts with the dozens of homemade jams that i need to use up (lemon-ginger, plum, quince, made by me. and apricot made by others.) then we have a massive amount of hazelnuts, as usual, given to us by friends. my father-in-law has volunteered to show me how to make torrone (which can best be translated as nougat, even though it's not the same) with the hazelnuts and sugar. and i want to make more torrone with chocolate. anyone have a good recipe? and for crying out loud, i've had the ingredients for these apricot bars and my favorite girl scout cookies for such a long time that i'm probably going to have to throw them out. of course, in this new era of my life (with the same aforementioned 10-month-old) i hardly ever cook anymore, except for his food. i make most of his mush food myself (except for jarred meat, which we hardly ever use anyway, because i honestly find handling raw meat disgusting and seeing as i already have a hard time making the rest of it, i'd rather just buy the organic jarred stuff and not think about it), cooking up large quantities of every ingredient and freezing them as dictated by the book super baby food.

tappettini puzzle, parte III / foam puzzle rugs, part III

tempo fa, ho scritto su come ho trasformato un piccolo puzzle tappettino in timbri e in una bachecha. il motivo è che sembra che quella plastica contiene sostanze dannose alla salute. non so se è vero, perché continuo a vedere questi puzzle in vendità. ma comunque il tappetto puzzle grande che abbiamo si era ridotto abbastanza male perché il nostro gatto non resisteva a farci sopra le unghie. quindi avevo deciso di farne una bachecha grande direttamente sulla parete. non so perché non l'ho fatto prima (ci ho messo circa un anno e mezzo da quando ho deciso di farlo) perché ci volevano giusto 2 minuti e qualche chiodo. ho cercato di disporre i colori come mi piacevano e mi sono resa conto solo il giorno dopo di aver fatto una parola all'interno: "day". anzi, sembra "w-day," che mi fa pensare solo a "D-Day" della seconda guerra mondiale. non esattamente la cosa più felice del mondo. va be', non fa niente. mia figlia ancora non legge le parole. e ancora non sa niente di guerre, beata lei!

a while back, i wrote about how i transformed a little foam alphabet puzzle into stamps and a bulletin board. the reason was that apparently that type of plastic contains substances which are hazardous to your health. i don't know if it's really true or not, because i keep seeing these puzzles for sale in stores. but anyway ours was in pretty awful shape because our cat could just not resist scratching it. so i had decided to make a big bulletin board with it directly onto the wall. i don't know why i didn't do it sooner (it took me about a year and a half from when i'd decided) because it only took about 2 minutes and a few nails. i tried to lay out the colors how i liked and i only realized the next day that i'd written a word within it: "day." actually, it says "w-day," which always makes me think of "D-Day" from the second world war. not exactly the most uplifting thing. oh, but whatever. my daughter still can't read words. and she still doesn't know anything about wars, lucky her!

abbiamo fissato un disegno sulla bachecha, ma le piace di più vuota. così si possono anche staccare le lettere e giocare sul muro. e si possono leggere le lettere, che le piacciono. quel disegno è stato fatto da un libro che mi piace tantissimo, di cui scriverò prossimamente!

we pinned up a drawing to test it out, but she likes it more empty. that way she can still remove the letters and play with them. and she can read the letters, which she likes. that drawing was made from a book that i really love and will write about soon!

ruches copri-macchie / stain-covering ruffles

non ci posso credere...avevo quasi finito questo post lungo, su cui avevo lavorato molto...e poi si è impazzito firefox, e l'ho perso. cerco di sopprimere tutte le male parole che vorrei dire (soprattutto perché sto allattando il mio piccolo mentre scrivo queste parole) e riscrivo, ma con molto meno parole!! allora, ho già scritto di come si è macchiata una maglietta bianca di mia figlia per la scuola. lo so, non si vedono le macchie nella foto sotto, ma ci sono, eccome!

i can't believe it...i'd almost finished translating this long post, which i'd spent quite a bit of time on...and firefox went nuts and i lost it. i'm trying to suppress all the swearing i'd like to do (mostly because i'm nursing my little guy as i type this) and am re-doing it, but with much fewer words!! so, i'd already written about how one of my daughter's white school t-shirts got stained. i know, you can't tell from this photo, but they are definitely there!

i was inspired by the many ruffle ideas i'd seen online, such as here and here and i sort of put those together with this idea. but what fabric to use for the ruffles? i fished around in my mega bags of scraps and found:

yes, i confess that those were indeed my undies, which were destroyed once and for all when i wore them during my last pregnancy. so, i ironed them and cut them into strips about 1.5 cm wide.

i laid them out on the shirt to create the design i wanted, trying to cover the stains.

i forgot to take pictures of this part, just when i made the flowers. sew a basting stitch down the center of the whole strip (not on the side, like in these pictures), knotting at only one end.

then you slide the strip along the thread to create the ruffles.

then i started pinning the ruffles along the design. i folded the ends of the strips under.

i sewed the ruffles on by hand with a backstitch, even though you can do it by machine. after it's all sewn on, you can pull out the basting stitches.

then the flowers. i used one strip for each flower using the same method as for the ruffles, but now sewing the basting stitch along one side of the strip, not at the center. (now you can look at the pictures above!) then wrap the ruffle around itself and sew the bottom part of it together. (i used the same thread as for the basting without cutting it off, and then used it again to sew the flower onto the shirt.)

however i discovered an unfortunate fact. it seems that you can't ever wash a garment embellished in this manner. look what happened to my poor flowers and ruffles! i'll have to try to sort it out with the iron. we'll see what happens!

mia madre mi ha sempre tagliato degli articoli dalle reviste e dai giornali che pensava mi potessero interessare. una volta mi ha pensato leggendo un articolo sull'attrice jenna fischer nella revista di oprah winfrey, "O," del maggio 2007. ha cerchiato una parte che parlava di quando la jenna adolescente ha trovato un vecchio diario dall'anno in cui è nata. e ha trovato che i suoi genitori avevano scritto un messaggio alla jenna futura quasi ogni giorno di quello che era successo quel giorno, che fosse "oggi hai provato le pesche omogeinizzate e ti piacevano tanto! ti piacciono ancora tanto?," "non hai smesso di piangere oggi, terzo giorno di fila. grazie mille." o "oggi hai provato il tuo completino di pasqua. ha dei piccoli coniglietti ed eri tanto carina! non vedo l'ora di portarti fuori con la famiglia." la jenna adolescente è rimasta sconvolta di scoprire che anche i suoi genitori erano umani e che l'adoravano.

my mother has always cut out magazine and newspaper articles that she thinks i would find interesting. once she thought of me reading an article about the actress jenna fiscer in oprah winfrey's magazine, "O," from may 2007. she circled a part about when the adolescent jenna found an old diary calendar from the year she was born. and she found that her parents had written a message to the future jenna almost every day about what had happened that day, whether it be "you tried strained peaches today and you loved them! do you still love peaches?," "you wouldn't stop crying today, third day in a row. thanks a lot." or " today you tried on your easter outfit. it has little bunnies on it and you look so cute! i can't wait to take you out wit hthe family." adolescent jenna was shocked to discover that even her parents were human and they loved her.

when i saw that article, my daughter was about to turn one, so i didn't do this with her and i stuck the article in my copy of "what to expect the first year." when my son was born last december, i took that book out and rediscovered the article. so i took a free calendar (the ones from the erbolario that i use every year) and i started writing every day, about the good things, the bad things, my doubts and difficulties. about everything.

col tempo, ho cominciato a saltare giorni o anche settimane. ma già ora che il mio piccolo ha 10 mesi, mi piace rileggere quello che ho scritto solo qualche mese fa. come'è già cambiato. e anch'io. rivivo i giorni che piangevo dalla stanchezza, che soffrivo a vederlo soffrire dal reflusso gastrico, che mi chiedevo che cosa fare nei momenti difficili. vedo la storia di un amore che cresce e matura, con i suoi alti e bassi. ed è una cosa incredibile.

as time went on, i started skipping days or even weeks. but already now that my little guy is 10 months old, i love rereading what i wrote just a few months ago. how much he's already changed. as have i. i relive the days that i cried out of exhaustion, that i suffered seeing how he suffered from acid reflux, that i wondered what in the world to do in those hard moments. i see the story of a love that grows and matures, with its ups and downs. and it's just amazing.

acquarelle da viaggio / travel watercolors

come sono belle le scatoline delle altoids (una mentina "curiosamente forte" famosa almeno negli USA e in inghilterra)! leggendo ora sulla pagina wikipedia sulle altoids, ho trovato che le persone usano le scatoline per un sacco di cose. io avevo visto due idee per usarle che mi sono molto piaciute:

un kit di giochi da tavola da viaggio
acquarelle da viaggio (ho visto qui, qui e qui)

how cool are altoids tins (you know, those "curiously strong" mints?)! as i now read the wikipedia page on altoids, i've found that people use those tins for loads of things. i'd seen two ideas of how to use them that i really liked:

a travel game kit
a travel watercolor kit (which i saw here, here and here)

la prima idea vorrei sempre fare, ma ho avuto qualche problema tecnica con lo stampante e non ho potuto stampare la pagina alla dimensione giusta e non l'ho più fatto.

i would like to do the first idea, but i had some technical issues with my printer and couldn't print out the game boards the right size and i just didn't try after that.

la seconda idea, invece, ho deciso di fare in tante per regalare ai nipoti statunitensi quando saremmo andati l'estate scorso. quindi ho preso una scatolina, un blocco di fimo e un tubo di lucida labbra (per fare le forme nel fimo). nel forno, ed ero pronta per riempire con le acquarelle.

i decided to mass produce the second idea, on the other hand, for gifts for my american nieces and nephews for when we went to visit this past summer. so i took one tin, a block of fimo and a tube of chapstick (to make the spaces in the fimo). in the oven, and i was ready to fill it up with watercolors.

come consigliato qui, ho mescolato un po' di acqua con le acquarelle dal tubo. ed è andato bene. ho usato i fantastix, strumenti per colorare come hanno consigliato alcuni. io ho avuto qualche difficoltà ad usarli, sinceramente, ma forse non avevo capito bene come usarli, chissà... comunque, con un pennello funzionano benissimo le acquarelle.

as was advised here, i mixed in a bit of water with the tubed watercolors. and it worked well. as some suggested, i used fantastix coloring tools. i honestly had some issues using them, but it could be that i just didn't understand how to use them properly, who knows... anyway, the watercolors work just great with a regular brush.

sempre in quella stessa pagina, l'autore ha detto che sono acquarelle per adulti, non bambini, visto che contengono sostanze tossiche. l'ho datto retta? no! non so perché. per fortuna, mia figlia (di cui avevo abbastanza fiducia che non avrebbe mangiato i colori o leccato le dita sporche) non ha ingerito i colori, ma ha sporcato in modo assurdo una maglietta. e queste acquarelle fighette non lavano via come quelle giotto, oh no! (nel prossimo post, vi dico che cosa ho fatto con quella maglietta.)

in that same page, the author warned that these are watercolors for grownups, not kids, seeing as they contain toxic products. did i pay any attention to him? no! i don't know why. luckily my daughter (who i trusted enough not to eat the watercolors or lick her watercolored fingers) didn't ingest the colors, but she did make an insane mess out of her shirt. these fancy watercolors don't wash away like the kid ones, oh no! (in my next post, i'll tell you what i did with that shirt.)

lezione imparata: non erano assolutamente adatte come regalo per i nipotini! per fortuna ne avevo fatta solo una!

lesson learned: they were definitely not the right gift for the little ones i had in mind! luckily i'd only made one so far!

ritorno a scuola e alla vita / back to school and life

non voglio neanche pensare a quanto tempo è passato. mi sembrava di aver superato il periodo più difficile a casa con i bimbi, ma evidentemente mi ero sbagliata. mi mancava tanto il blog, ma non avevo il tempo da dedicarlo. quindi ho deciso di tornarci, ma quanto riesco. spero una volta alla settimana, ma vedremmo…(anche se sarebbe più facile se funzionasse correttamente il mio computer/internet, che al momento non mi vuole permettere di postare quando dico io)

i don’t even want to think about how much time has gone by. i thought that i’d gotten past the hardest time at home with the kids, but apparently i was wrong. i really missed the blog, but i just didn’t have time for it. so i’ve decided to go back to it, but just as much as i can manage. i hope once a week, but we’ll see…(though that might be easier if my computer/internet were working properly, seeing as it's not letting me post when i want to)

e allora, abbiamo già ripreso la scuola da quasi un mese (anche se la mia frequentatrice della scuola materna sta a casa da una settimana con la febbre/tosse). e dovevo procurare i grembiuli nuovi. e ovviamente, la sofietta voleva con hello kitty. che costano almeno €25 l’uno.

so, we’ve been back to school for almost a month (although my preschooler has been home for a week with fever/cough). and i had to get the new school smocks (in italy, kids up through elementary school have to wear a smock to school.). and obviously, sofietta wanted hello kitty ones. which cost at least €25 each.

invece, con il grembiule meno costoso che ho trovato (€7) e delle applicazioni di hello kitty trovati in merceria (circa €3), ho risparmiato €30 per i due grembiuli. e sofia si sente una grande figona, meno male!

instead, with the cheapest smock i found (€7) and hello kitty patches (about €3), i saved €30 for the two smocks. and sofia feels super cool, thankfully!

oh, quel fiore all’inizio del post? l’ha fatto sofia prendendo cose dalla mia scatolone delle roba da riciclare in modo creativo. come mamma, come figlia. come sono orgogliosa!

oh, and that flower at the beginning of the post? sofia made it with stuff stolen from my box of stuff for creative recycling. like mamma, like daughter. i’m so proud!

per i papà / for dads

in italia si festeggia la festa del papà il 19 marzo, ma negli stati uniti (e tanti altri paesi) si festeggia la terza domenica di giugno…cioè oggi!

in italy father’s day is celebrated march 19, but in the united states (and many other countries) it’s celebrated the third sunday of june…that is, today!

il regalo preferito che ha ricevuto mio marito per questa festa è sempre la maglietta con il ritratto e la porta con molto orgoglio. questo anno volevo fargli un’altra maglietta con le impronte o qualcosa di tutti e due i bimbi, ma non ce lo fatto in tempo. invece ha avuto un regalo di cui la mia parte è stata molto più limitata: un libro scritto ed illustrato da mia figlia.

my hubby’s favorite father’s day gift so far is the portrait t-shirt and he wears it with much pride. this year i wanted to make him another t-shirt with both kids’ handprints or something like that, but i just didn’t manage in time. instead he got a gift which i played a much smaller part in: a book written and illustrated by my daughter.

mi ha dettato la storia e l’ho scritta esattamente come l’ha raccontata. poi ha disegnato, fatto collage, messo i timbri, ecc, fin quando fosse contenta del risultato. lo so che non è la prima volta che un bimbo fa un regalo così, ma a volte cercando un idea fai-da-te per un regalo, uno si dimentica delle cose più semplici e come possono essere i regali migliori!

she dictated the story to me and i wrote it down just as she told it. then she drew the pictures, did a bit of collage, stamped, etc, until she was happy with it. i know it’s not the first time that a kid makes a gift like this, but sometimes while trying to think of a good homemade gift, you can forget about the most simple things and how they can be the best gifts!

per il nonno, invece, sofia ha fatto una porta-penne, usando una di queste scatoline di latta (come ho usato anche qui).

for her nonno (grandfather), sofia made a pen holder, using one of these tin cans (like i used here).

ho tagliato un pezzo di cartoncino (il colore la sua scelta) della misura giusta e l’ha decorato come voleva. poi ha messo lei la colla e le ho aiutato ad applicarlo ai lati della scatolina.

i cut out a piece of colored paper (her choice) the size of the can and she decorated as she wanted. then she put the glue on herself and i helped her apply it to the sides of the can.

alla fine le ho dovuto far vedere come aggiungere più colla ai pezzi che ha tagliato e applicato, perché rotolati si staccavano un poco. purtroppo, mi sono scordata di fare la foto prima di regalarglielo, ma qui si capisce abbastanza com’è fatto. onestamente, non so quanto il nonno l’ha apprezzato, ma mio marito ne voleva uno anche per lui!

in the end i had to show her how to put more glue under the pieces that she cut out and glued on because rolling it up the edges came off the paper. unfortunately i forgot to take a picture before we gave it away, but you can get a good idea from here what it was like. i honestly don’t know how much the nonno appreciated this gift, but my hubby wanted one just like it for himself!

first of all, i’d like to thank all the italians who voted in the referendum. i’m so happy with the result!

non lo so di voi, ma ho sempre bisogno di altri vasi per le piante. mi sento che li compro in continuazione. quindi ho deciso di farmene uno con una scatolina di latta e un calzino.

i don’t know about you, but i always need more plant pots. i feel like i’m constantly buying new ones. so i decided to make one with a tin can and a sock.

sì! una scatolina e un calzino! qui ho usato il barattolino del mio amato lievito alimentare e un calzino peloso di poliestere che faceva sudare i miei piedi.

yes! a can and a sock! here i used an empty can of my beloved nutritional yeast and one of those fuzzy polyester socks that made my feet sweat.

se vorresti un vaso dove mettere la terriccia, bisognerà fare dei fori nel fondo con un chiodo o qualcos’altro appuntito. se vorresti un vaso solo per l’acqua e fiori, ovviamente non si mettono i fori se non ti interessa acqua dappertutto e un vaso senza acqua.

if you want a pot with soil in it, you’ll need to make some holes in the bottom with a nail, ice pick, awl or some other pointy thing. if you want just a vase for water and flowers, obviously don’t make any holes, that is unless you’d like water everywhere and a vase without water.

metti il tappo di plastica sul fondo. in questo modo l’acqua in eccesso nella terriccia non scapperà.

put the plastic top on the bottom of the can. this way the excess water in the soil won’t get all over the place.

con la scatolina sotto sopra, comincia a coprirla con il calzino dal basso. deve essere un calzino abbastanza elastico.

with the can upside down, start unrolling the sock from the bottom. it needs to be a somewhat elastic sock.

se ti serve il vaso per la terriccia (e quindi ci hai messo i fori nel fondo), è meglio tagliare un cerchio nel fondo del calzino in modo che si può togliere il tappo di plastica quando si inaffia senza dover togliere tutto il calzino ogni volta. poi si può piegare i bordi rimasti sotto il calzino sui lati della scatolina.

if you’re using this as a pot with soil (and therefore you put holes in the bottom), it’s better if you cut a circle out at the bottom of the sock so you can take off the plastic cap when you water the plant and don’t have to take off the whole sock every time. then you can tuck the edges left under the sock at the sides of the can.

fold the upper part of the sock under the rest of the sock, and there you have it! nice work!

i just noticed now that the plant in the picture at the top has already grown quite a bit in the two weeks since i did this project. so i guess that this pot works pretty darn well!

ne stanno parlando tutti! normalmente non parlo qui della politica o altre cose del genere, ma qui faccio eccezione perché ci tengo davvero tanto: per piacere, ANDATE A VOTARE IL 12 O 13 DI GIUGNO!!!

everyone’s talking about it! normally i don’t talk about anything politically charged, but i’m making an exception here because it’s something that i feel extremely strongly about: please, italian citizens, GO VOTE ON JUNE 12 AND 13!!!

come si sa, per far valere il risultato, sia si o no, del referendum, devono votare almeno il 50% degli italiani che hanno il diritto di votare, cioè almeno 25 milioni! mi pare una cosa terribile. non è giusto che il parere di chi fa lo sforzo di votare viene gettato via se non abbastanza persone si esprimono. è un dovere andare a votare e, secondo me, se uno decide di non votare, peggio per lui. poi, avrete già sentito: il fatto che il governo ha messo il voto per il referendum in giorni diversi delle elezioni (per cercare di non raggiungere il quorum) ci ho costato come paese €300 milione! €5 ogni italiano. tutti quei soldi buttati, in un momento così che mancano i soldi per le scuole, la sanità, la cultura, ecc. non so di voi, ma io non lo sopporto!!

as all italians know, to make the result, whether it be yes or no, of the referendum valid, at least 50% of italians legally able to vote must show up to vote, so at least 25 million people! i find this just terrible. it’s not fair that the opinion of someone who made the effort to vote gets thrown out if not enough people express their opinion. it is a duty to vote and, in my opinion, if someone decides not to vote, too bad for him. then, there’s an extra nasty bit of information: the fact that the government put the referendum vote on different dates than the elections a few weeks ago (so as to try to keep from reaching the quorum) cost this country €300 million! that’s €5 for every italian. all that money thrown away, in a period like this when there’s no money for schools, health, culture, etc. i don’t know about you, but i just can’t stomach it!

ho sentito una bella idea: andiamo a votare presto domenica il 12, entro mezzogiorno, in modo tale che alla prima rilevazione del Ministero degli Interni risulteranno molti gli italiani che hanno votato, provocando negli altri la convinzione che il quorum è effettivamente a portata di mano sollecitando ad un'ampia partecipazione. così farò io. e non dimenticate: le schede dei referendum non vanno sovrapposte, hanno la caratteristica della carta carbone, e saranno considerate invalide.

i heard a good idea: everyone go vote early on sunday june 12, before noon, so that when the Ministry publishes the number of votes so far, there will be a high number and many italians will feel that it just might be possible for us to reach the quorum, hopefully convincing more people to vote. that’s what i’ll do. and don’t forget: the voting forms should not be one on top of another when writing on them, as they are like carbon transfer sheets, and will be considered invalid.

sedia rinnovata – revamped chair

un giorno dell’estate scorso sono entrata nella camera da letto di mia figlia e le ho trovata con suo cugino occupati a colorare ogni centimetro di una delle sue sedie (queste da ikea che prima vendevano insieme a questo) con i pastelli a cera. sono rimasta un attimo con la bocca spalancata, ma poi mi sono ricordata il nostro motto, “è suo e può farne quel cavolo che vuole” e li ho solo fatto i miei complimenti per i bei colori.

one day last summer i walked into my daughter’s room to find her and her cousin busy coloring every inch of one of her chairs (these ones from ikea that they used to sell with this) with crayons. i stood there a moment with my jaw dropped, but then i remembered our motto, “it’s hers so she can do whatever the heck she wants with it” and i just complimented them on the nice coloring job.

il problema si è svelato dopo. sedendoci sopra, un pochino di colore rimaneva sul sedere. e una volta che mia figlia ha fatto un piccolo incidente con la pipì si è seduta sopra facendo una macchia orrenda di colori sia sul culetto che sulla sedia.

the problem came up later. sitting on it, a bit of color came off on the sitter’s bum. and one time my daughter had a little accident and then sat on it, making a hideous smudge of colors on both her butt and the chair.

quindi le ho fatto ricolorare le parti rovinate il meglio possibile e l’abbiamo coperto con la vernice trasparente. e ora abbiamo una sedia bellissima e vestiti protetti! quasi quasi la costringo a fare un servizio simile ad altri mobili!

so i made her recolor the ruined parts as much as possible and we covered the whole chair with transparent paint. and now we have a beautiful chair and safe clothes! i’m considering forcing her to do it all over again with other furniture!

tovagliette: prove I e II – placemats: takes 1 and 2

l’estate scorso si sono sposate due delle mie amiche e ho deciso di farle delle tovagliette da pranzo, tovagliolini lavabili e sottobicchieri con il foglio lavagna. ho iniziato con quelli per chiara. solo che…faceva molto caldo umido, ero incinta e avevo difficoltà non solo con la pressione bassa ma anche con la macchina per cucire. i bordi delle tovagliette si piegavano e non capivo perché. ho fatto un sacco di prove fino a quando non mi sentivo male. l’amica mi ha convinto di regalargliele lo stesso. ma non ero per niente soddisfatta.

last summer two of my friends got married and i decided to make each of them placemats, cloth napkins and chalkcloth coasters. i started with chiara’s. except…it was really damn hat and humid, i was pregnant and was having issues not only with low blood pressure but also my sewing machine. the edges of the placemats kept folding over funny and i couldn’t figure out why. i ripped out seams and tried over and over until i started feeling sick. my friend convinced me to give them to her anyway, but i wasn’t at all happy with them.

you can write on the coasters with chalk so people don’t mix up their coasters. here you can see the first coasters i made like this.

poi mi sono messa a fare quelli di katie. non volendo ripetere l’esperienza, ho fatto gli angoli a cappuccio per i bordi (e ho usato un altro piedino per la macchina per cucire, quello con la molla piccolina da un lato, chissà come si chiama).

then i started making katie’s. not wanting a repeat performance, i decided to do mitered corners (and i also used a different sewing machine foot, the one with the tiny spring on one side, whatever it’s called).

ho cominciato a fare anche i tovagliolini con gli angoli a cappuccio, ma non ce la facevo a lavorare con il ferro da stiro in quel caldo. quindi ho fatto un po’ la furbetta e ne ho fatto il resto con la taglia e cuci (quelli che si vedono sopra).

i started making the napkins with mitered corners, too, but i just couldn’t handle using the iron so much in that heat. so i kind of cheated and did the rest with the serger (the napkins above).

per il retro e i bordi delle tovagliette e dei sottobicchieri ho usato un batik che mi piaceva un sacco.

i used a batik that i loved for the backs and borders of the placemats and coasters.

e invece per il centro delle tovagliette, la fatica mostruosa. mi piaceva talmente tanto la grafica che la mia amica aveva fatto per i suoi inviti, che ho copiato le immagini degli alberi e ho fatto le applicazioni.

the massive effort came for the tops of the placemats. when i saw the images that my friend had created for her invitations, it was love at first sight, so i copied the tree images and made appliqués.

avevo già fatto delle applicazioni in passato (ad esempio qui e qui). ma queste sono venute molto più carine, secondo me. mio marito mi ha consigliato di andare a comprare qualche altro regalo per il matrimonio e tenere queste per noi, ma non ce la farei mai ad usare tovagliette su cui avevo messo tanta fatica!

i had already done appliqués in the past (for example here and here). but these ones came out much better. my husband thought that i should just go out and buy a wedding gift and keep them for us, but i don’t think i could handle using placemats that i’d put so much work into!

collars and leashes – collari e guinzagli

ed eccovi la seconda parte di “facciamo una montagna di cose per clifford”! (la prima parte si trova qui) questa volta, sempre da pezzi di stoffa rimasti da altri progetti, abbiamo fatto collari e guinzagli per il cane grande e rosso clifford (che, essendo un cane molto gentile, li fa usare anche dagli altri animali a casa nostra).

and here we have part two of “let’s make tons of stuff for clifford”! (you can see the first part here) this time, again from fabric scraps, we made collars and leashes for clifford the big red dog (who, kind dog that he is, lets the other animals at our home use too).

ho tagliato delle strisce di stroffa presa dalle bustoni strappiene di rimasuglie di altri progetti e le ho piegato con l’aiuto del ferro da stiro. è meglio misurarli su qualche peluche prima di cucire (io non l’ho fatto e sono un po’ grandi).

i cut out the strips from fabric taken from some massive bags of scraps left over from other projects and i folded them with some help from the iron. it’s probably a good idea to try them on a stuffed animal or two before sewing (i didn’t and they turned out a little big).

poi per chiudere i collari si può cucirci sopra il velcro o usare i bottoncini a pressione. solo che i bimbi possono trovare difficile i bottoncini (solo dopo ho scoperta che mia figlia non ci riesce a chiuderli da sola).

then to close the collars you can sew some velcro on or use snaps. except that kids might have trouble with the snaps (only after the fact did i realize that my daughter can’t close them by herself).

e poi i guinzagli. lo stesso metodo, ma con strisce più lunghe. ad una estremità ho cucito un’ansa per poterci infilare il collare. poi mia figlia mi ha informato che c’era bisogno dell’ansa anche dall’altra parte per poter legarlo al tavolo (o letto o sedia o…). quindi ho pensato di aggiungere un bottoncino a pressione in modo di poterlo aprire e chiudere intorno al supporto desiderato.

and then the leashes. the same method, but with longer strips. i sewed a loop at one end to slip the collar into. then my daughter informed me that there needed to be a loop at the other end, too, to tie to the table (or bed or chair or…). so i decided to add a snap so that the second loops can be open and closed around the desired chaining point.

e rieccomi! pensavo di non farcela più con il blog e di doverlo lasciare, ma mi dispiaceva troppo. quindi ho deciso di fare quello che posso, dandoci una vita nuova. cioè, come avrete già visto, con un nuovo look (che sto ancora cercando di sistemare) e facendo un unico blog sia in italiano che in inglese (invece di avere uno separato in inglese). chi vuole vedere i vecchi post in inglese può vedere qui.

and here i am again! i thought that i’d just have to abandon my poor blog, but that just made me so sad, so i decided to do what i can while giving the poor thing some new life. as you can see, not only the fancy new look (which i’m still trying to get just right) and having just one blog in both italian and english (instead of having a separate blog in english). whoever wants to see the old posts in english can find them here.

visto che non ho mai tempo, i progetti che propongo non sono esattamente meravigliosi, ma spero che daranno qualche idea a un lettore o due, quindi li condivido lo stesso. dunque, oggi abbiamo la prima parte di “creiamo più cose per clifford di quante ne ho io,” ovvero, ossa imbottite.

seeing as i never have any time, the projects i’ve been working on are not exactly stunning, but they might give someone an idea or two, so i’m sharing them anyway. so today we have part one of “let’s expand clifford’s wardrobe until he has more things than i do”: stuffed bones.

prima, usando il pennarello delebile con l’acqua, ho disegnato la forma dell’ossa sul interno di due maniche corte di un polo (il resto usato per un cuscino, essendo una super-riciclosa, io). poi, ho cucito sulla linea, lasciando uno spazio. poi ho sciacquato le linee sotto il rubinetto e ho fatto asciugare il tessuto.

first, using one of those markers that wash off right away with water, i drew the shape of a bone on the inside of two short sleeves left over from a polo shirt (the rest was made into a pillow, being the recycling maniac that i am). then i sewed over the line, leaving an opening. then i washed off the lines and let them dry.

quando si è asciutto, ho tagliato intorno alle cuciture, ho girato le ossa nel senso giusto e le ho messo davanti a mia figlia con una busta di ovatta. quando ha finito di riempirle per bene, ho chiuso le aperture cucendole a mano.

when they were dry, i cut around the stitches, turned the bones right way out and plopped my daughter down with them and a bag of stuffing. when she was done filling them up, i hand stitched them closed.

e vedete come sono contenti i due clifford? e non solo!

lo so, sono scomparsa completamente. questo inizio di vita del mio piccino è stato finora molto…diciamo tempestoso. ne scriverò qualcosa più in avanti perché ho fatto un po’ di ricerche e ho scoperto qualcosa che potrebbe essere utile per altri genitori.

i know, i’ve completely disappeared. the beginning of my little darling’s life has so far been…let’s just say, complicated. i’ll write more about that another time because i did some research and found out some things that could be useful for other parents.

ma per ora quello di cui vorrei scrivere al volo è questo: mi è arrivato il newsletter di La Bottega della Luna (negozio online di tante cose per la mestruazione) con la notizia che Luciana Littizzetto ha parlato della moon cup su Che Tempo Che Fa. visto che normalmente mi piacciono tantissimo i suoi interventi, ero contentissima che aveva deciso di parlarne e farne pubblicità. ma quando l’ho visto, sono rimasta malissimo. l’ha preso in giro, dicendo che non poteva essere comoda come dicono le donne e che sicuramente è stato un uomo ad inventare un attrezzo del genere. e tante risate dal pubblico in studio. (chi lo vuole vedere lo può fare qui, dal 10° minuto.)

what i’d like to write about quickly now is this: i got the newsletter from La Bottega della Luna (on online store for all things menstruation-related) with the news that Luciana Littizzetto had talked about the moon cup on the show Che Tempo Che Fa. seeing as i normally really like her, i was happy that she’d decided to talk about it and give it a bit of publicity. but when i saw it, i was very disappointed. she made fun of it, saying that there was no way it could possibly be comfortable as women say and that it could only have been a man to have come up with such a contraption. and the audience in the studio laughed and applauded. (anyone who wants to see it, in italian obviously, can do so here, from the 10th minute.)

non ho mai usato personalmente la marca moon cup, ma uso la coppetta mestruale diva cup dal 2007 (e ci ho già scritto qualcosa qui). sono la stessa cosa, ma conosco anche tante donne che usano la marca moon cup e non ho MAI sentito dire da nessuna che è scomoda. anzi! non si sente proprio quando è inserta correttamente. ma la Littizzetto non l’ha mai usato, come faceva a saperlo?! la donna ha molta più libertà, costa molto di meno di prodotti usa e getta ed è ecologica. e poi, come dice la Bottega, è stata una donna ad inventare la coppetta mestruale.

i’ve never personally used the brand moon cup, but i’ve used the menstrual cup diva cup since 2007 (and i already wrote about it here). they’re the same thing, but i also know lots of women who use the brand moon cup and i’ve NEVER heard anyone say it was uncomfortable. au contraire! you can’t feel it at all when it’s inserted correctly. but how could Littizzetto, who never used it, know that?! the woman has much more freedom, it costs much less than disposable products and it’s environmentally friendly. and then, as the Bottega says, it was a woman who invented the menstrual cup.

volevo dire questa cosa perché mi dispiacerebbe tantissimo se ci sono donne che sentono parlare qualcuno che normalmente apprezzano in modo negativo su un prodotto fantastico e quindi decidono di non provarlo proprio. consiglio a TUTTE QUANTE la coppetta mestruale (e ce ne sono tantissime di marche, non solo quelle che ho menzionato io), che ti può cambiare la vita, come ha fatto a me e tante altre. sul serio, non esaggero!

i wanted to write this because it would be really sad if some women heard someone they normally agree with talk negatively about a fantastic product and therefore decided not to even try it out. i advise ALL WOMEN try out the menstrual cup (and there are loads of different brands, not just the ones i mentioned), which can change your life, as it did for me and many others. honestly, i’m not exaggerating!

regali fatti dai bambini: segnalibri col ritratto - kids’ DIY gifts: portrait bookmarks

quando ho visto questo progetto nel libro handmade home di amanda blake soule, sapevo di doverlo assolutamente fare con mia figlia per regali. si trattano di segnalibri fatti con scarti di tessuti. il bambino disegna il ritratto del destinatario e l’adulto ci ricama sopra e cuce il tutto. qui sopra si vedono quelli che ha fatto di me (sinistra) e di mio marito “daddy” (destra). ne sto facendo parecchi di questi segnalibri per regali di natale da mia figlia, ma faccio vedere pochi per non rovinare la sorpresa agli altri! è un bel progetto perché il bambino può disegnare quello che vuole e scegliere i pezzi di tessuto, il colore del filo da ricamo e il nastro che spunta fuori. come si fanno?

when i saw this project in the book handmade home by amanda blake soule, i knew i needed to do it with my little girl for gifts. they are bookmarks made with scraps of fabric. the child draws the recipient’s portrait and the adult embroiders over that and then sews it together. here you can see the ones she made of me (left) and my hubby, “daddy” (right). i’m making a bunch of these bookmarks as christmas gifts from my daughter, but i’m only going to show a few so as not to ruin the surprise for the others! this is a great project because the child can draw what he wants and choose the fabric, the color of embroidery thread and the ribbon at the top. how do you make them?

1. scegli il tessuto. io ho usato pezzi di lino avanzati da due progetti (le lenzuola con gli angoli e il copripiumino) e poi dei pezzi di lino colorato per il retro rimasto dai tovagliolini lavabili che ho fatto per un’amica. stira il tessuto (evidentemente non l’ho fatto molto bene per il pezzo in questa foto) e attaccalo ad un tavolo con lo scotch di carta, delimitando lo spazio dove vorresti il disegno. di solito ho fatto alto circa 20 cm e largo circa 9 cm, ma alla fine sono venuti tutti un po’ diversi.

1. choose the fabric. i used leftover scraps of linen from two projects (fitted bed sheets and a comforter cover) and then pieces of colored linen left over from cloth napkins i made for a friend for the backs. iron the fabric (apparently i didn’t do a very good job for the piece in this picture) and attach it to the table with masking tape, marking off the area where you want the picture drawn. i usually made mine about 20 cm high and 9 cm wide, though they all ended up being different from each other.

2. fa disegnare il bambino con un pennarello per i tessuti che si lava con l’acqua (mi trovo molto bene con questo) all’interno del rettangolo di scotch. poi togli lo scotch. nel disegno a destra si vedono delle macchie strane. sono delle cose che non piacevano a mia figlia dopo di averle disegnate che ho cancellato subito con un pochino d’acqua.

2. have your child draw inside the rectangle with a fabric marker that washes off with just water (i use and love this one). then take off the tape. you can see some spots on the picture on the right side here. they were things that my daughter drew but didn’t like, so i erased them right away with a touch of water.

3. ricama sopra il disegno, usando il cerchio per tenere fermo il tessuto. se ti va, ricama anche il nome o gli iniziali con l’anno sul pezzo del retro, sempre con il cerchio.

3. using an embroidery hoop (or loop?), embroider over the picture. if you want, also embroider the name or initials of the child with the year on the back piece.
4. lava via il pennarello delibile, far asciugare il tessuto e stira. (di nuovo, si vede che non stiro sempre quando dovrei!) segna sul retro del ritratto ricamato dove vorresti cucire, quindi la dimensione finale. metti il pezzo con il disegno sopra quello del retro, con i lati buoni all’interno, e spilla.

4. wash away the marker, let the fabric dry and iron it. (again, you can see i don’t always iron when i should!) mark where you want to sew, therefore the final dimensions, on the back of the embroidered picture. put the piece with the portrait on top of the back piece, good sides together, and pin.

5. ecco i pezzi spillati visto da dietro.

6. cuci lungo il rettangolo che hai disegnato, lasciando uno spazio nella parte superiore. poi taglia il tessuto in più e tagli dei triangoli agli angoli per girarli meglio.

6. sew along the rectangle you drew, leaving an open space at the top. then trim off the extra fabric and cut triangles at the corners so you can turn them better.
7. gira il tessuto e premi gli angoli e i lati dall’interno con una mattita o qualcosa del genere. gira i bordi dello spazio lasciato verso l’interno e stira. 7. turn the fabric right side out and press out the corners and sides with a pencil or something like that. turn in the edges of the open space and iron. (this time you really need to!) i don’t know if it was really necessary, but i ironed with another piece of fabric over the embroidered parts because i didn’t know if something bad would’ve happened without covering them. then slip a bit of folded ribbon in the open space and pin it shut.

visto che non sono bravissima con ricamo, ho messo un bel po’ di tempo a fare i segnalibri così. poi mi dava un po’ di fastidio che, alla fine, quello che si vede è il lavoro che fa l’adulto di ricamo, non il disegno originale del bambino. ho pensato un po’…

seeing as i’m not that great at embroidering, it took me a while to make this type of bookmark. then it bothered me that, in the end, what you see is the work of the adult’s embroidery, not the child’s original picture. so i thought a bit…

non mi è piaciuto il risultato facendo un disegno direttamente con un pennarello permanente perché l’inchiostro viene assorbito troppo dal tessuto e non viene molto nitido il disegno (almeno non sul lino che ho usato io).

i didn’t like the look of drawing directly with permanent markers because the fabric absorbed too much of the ink and made a smudged picture (at least on the linen that i used).

poi ho pensato che il bambino potrebbe pittare direttamente. ho deciso contro i colori per le stoffe (che ho usato qui) perché vengono meglio se ci si ripassa una seconda volta, una cosa impensabile per un bambino. e poi probabilmente non ci sarà mai bisogno di lavare i segnalibri, quindi non sembrava così importante. invece ho scelto gli acrilici. il mio modo minimamente ecologico di fare pittare mia figlia è di usare un contenitore di yogurt grande per l’acqua, uno straccio per pulire il pennello e le mani, e quei contenitori di plastica dal salumeria (che non si possono riciclare con il resto della plastica) per i colori.

then i thought that the child could paint directly on the fabric. i decided against fabric paint (which i used here) because they look better if you do two coats, absolutely unthinkable for a kid! and then of course it probably won’t ever be necessary to wash these things, so i didn’t think it was so important. instead i chose acrylics. my somewhat ecological way of having my daughter paint is by using a big yogurt container for the water, a rag to clean off the paint brushes, and a washed-out clamshell container from the deli (which you can’t recycle with the rest of the plastic, at least not here) for the paint.

l’unico cambiamento che ho fatto nella procedura sopra (a parte, ovviamente, il ricamo) è stato di pittare il nome e l’anno sul retro solo alla fine, dopo aver cucito il tutto.

the one change i made in the procedure above (besides, obviously, the embroidery part) was to paint the name and year on the back at the very end, after having sewn everything together.
anche questi sono molto carini e ci vuole molto meno tempo per farli. per un bambino, è molto difficile fare un ritratto con la pittura sulla stoffa, quindi mia figlia ha fatto solo i disegni come piacciono a lei, molto astratti e spesso mescolando i colori. ovviamente, hanno completamente un altro effetto, ma mi piacciono lo stesso. quale tipo preferite voi?

these came out quite nicely, too, and took much less time to make. for a kid, it’s hard to do a detailed picture with paint on fabric, so my daughter just did pictures as she likes, very abstract and often mixing all the colors up. they obviously have a totally different effect, but i like them, too. which type do you prefer?

ieri ho ritrovato l’albero calendario dell’avvento che ho fatto l’anno scorso e mia figlia l’ha decorato con le palline porta-regalino fatte soprattutto con le uova di plastica kinder.era contentissima e si è messa là per un sacco di tempo a disporre le palline in modi diversi e di scegliere le sue preferite.

yesterday i took the advent calendar that i made last year out from storage and my daughter put all the gift-holding ornaments on it. we made these ornaments mostly from the plastic containers inside kinder eggs. she was thrilled to see all the eggs again and she sat there forever to decorate and re-decorate the tree calendar and choose her favorite ornaments.

come scrivo ogni tanto, vivere in un altro paese ti da la possibilità di scoprire tante cose nuove. ad esempio, non mi dimenticherò mai della mia confusione la prima volta che ho messo piede in italia quando ho visto il bidet nel bagno del albergo. mi sono chiesta, “perché ce ne sono due gabinetti qui dentro?” (negli stati uniti non esistono i bidet)

as i write every so often, living in another country gives you the possibility to discover tons of new things. for example, i’ll never forget my confusion my very first time in italy upon seeing the bidet in the hotel bathroom. i wondered, “why are there two toilets in here?” (as anyone who’s spent time in the united states knows, there aren’t any bidets there)

ti abitui a tante di queste cose nuove (ora mi sembra assurdo NON avere il bidet quando torno negli stati uniti) ma altri ti restano sempre ridicole. una di queste convinzioni italiane che non sono mai riuscita a mandare giù è l’idea che i biscotti, barrette di cioccolato e altre merende del genere fanno bene al salute. se vuoi sciogliere i pan di stelle nel latte del biberon come una cosa sfiziosa e gustosa per tuo figlio, d’accordo, ma ti prego, non cercare di dirmi che è una cosa salutare da dare regolarmente ad un bambino di un anno (o di più) per farlo crescere bene e forte.

you get used to a lot of these new things (now it seems gross when i’m in the states and DON’T have a bidet) but others never stop seeming completely ridiculous. one of these italian beliefs that i’ve never gotten used to is the idea that cookies, chocolate bars and other junk snacks like that are good for your health. if you want to dissolve pan di stelle (chocolate and hazelnut cookies with sugar glazed stars on top) in your child’s milk bottle for a yummy, occasional snack, ok, fine, but please don’t try to tell me that it’s a healthy every day breakfast for a one-year-old (or older) to help him grow up big and strong.

le pubblicità che mi hanno sempre dato più fastidio sono quelle del kinder. come si fa a chiamare quella cremina bianca stra-dolce “latte”? che c’entra il latte con quella robaccia? e mi vuoi dire che “bontà” contiene? poi il motto “il cioccolato che aiuta a crescere”… per piacere!

the advertisements that have always bugged me the most are kinder’s. how can you call that super-sweet white cream inside kinder bars “milk”? what in the world does milk have to do with that gunk? and what “goodness” or “bounty” could it really offer? and the slogan “il cioccolato che aiuta a crescere” (the chocolate that helps you grow)… oh, please!!

quindi ero molto contenta di leggere nell’ultima edizione della rivista di altroconsumo che, grazie ad un nuovo regolamento, l’efsa (l’autorità europea per la sicurezza alimentare) deve verificare le affermazioni degli slogan di produttori alimentari. hanno trovato, ovviamente, che non c’è assolutamente niente nel cioccolato kinder che aiuta a crescere, quindi la ferrero è stato costretto a cambiare lo slogan. secondo me, neanche “il gusto di diventare grandi” è il massimo della correttezza, ma un passo alla volta!

so i was very happy when i read in the latest edition of the altroconsumo magazine (something similar to the united states’ consumer reports) that, thanks to new laws, the efsa (the european authority for food security) must verify the affirmations of food producers’ slogans. they found, obviously, that there is absolutely nothing in kinder chocolate that helps you grow, so they were forced to change their slogan. i don’t think that “il gusto di diventare grandi” (the taste of growing up/getting bigger) is particularly truthful, either, but at least it’s a step in the right direction!

nuova collana con i semi di melone - new necklace with melon seeds

ho scritto un mese fa dei gioielli che ho fatto con i semi di melone, un’idea che ho avuto da little treasures. ci sono due modi per colorare i semi: o con lo smalto delle unghie o con un pennarello. solo che ho avuto un problema con la collana fatta con i semi colorati con un pennarello permanente: essendo toccati dai vestiti, le mani e non so che altro, il colore del pennarello (nonostante completamente asciutto) si è trasferito anche sulle perline e le parti dei semi lasciati al colore naturale. il risultato: una collana viola e rosa che lasciava anche il colore sul collo dei vestiti.

i wrote a month ago about the jewelry that i made with melon seeds, an idea that i got from little treasures. there are two ways to color the seeds: either with nail polish or with a marker. except i had a problem with the necklace made with marker-colored seeds: as they came in contact with my skin, clothes and whatever else, the color (despite being perfectly dry) rubbed off onto the wooden beads and parts of the seeds left in their natural color. the result: a purple and pink necklace which left color on the collar of my clothes, as well.

mi piaceva molto la collana con il viola (probabilmente il mio colore preferito) quindi ne ho fatto un’altra con lo smalto viola. guarda che differenza fra quella nuova (sopra) e quella vecchia macchiata (sotto)! (non si vede tanto nella foto, ma in quella vecchia anche i semi sono molto macchiati di rosa.)

i really liked the purple necklace (it’s probably my favorite color) so i made another with purple nail polish. and just look what a difference between the new one (above) and the old, stained one (below)! (you can’t see so well in the photo, but the seeds of the old necklace are all pink.)

quando ho scritto delle prime collane, ho parlato anche delle difficoltà che ho trovato smaltando queste perline di legno piccoline. maya mi ha consigliato di metterli su stuzzicadenti infilati in una bacheca di sughero per smaltarle. ho provato così, ma usando un pezzo di polistirolo invece del sughero, ed è stato facilissimo e sono venute smaltate perfettamente! grazie, maya! per i semi, invece, ho smaltato metà di un lato di ciascuno e li ho lasciati asciugare su uno di quei vassoi delle pasticcerie (che lavo e riutilizzo quando possibile). questi vassoi sono buoni non solo perché recuperati, ma perché lo smalto non si attacca molto alla superficie plastificata. poi, dopo qualche ora, quando ero sicura che fossero completamente asciutti, ho fatto anche l’altro lato e li ho fatto asciugare di nuovo sullo stesso vassoio.

when i wrote about the first necklaces, i mentioned the difficulty i had while nail polishing the little wooden beads. maya suggested i stick them on toothpicks stuck in a cork board to paint them. i tried doing this, but using a piece of styrofoam instead of the cork board, and it was super easy and the got painted perfectly! thanks, maya! for the seeds, i painted half of one side of each and let them dry on one of those pastry shop trays that we always have hanging around here in italy (which i wash and reuse whenever possible). these trays are great not only because they’re reused, but because the nail polish doesn’t attach much to the coated surface. then, after a few hours, when i was sure that they were completely dry, i did the other side and let them dry again on the same tray.

e ho messo subito in funzione la collana nuova ieri (sulla spiaggia di erchie, sulla costiera amalfitanta, durante una gita domenicale). buona settimana!

and i put the new necklace to use right away yesterday (on the beach at erchie, on the amalfi coast, during a sunday daytrip). have a great week!

i’ve been working on christmas gifts these days. that is, when my back isn’t absolutely killing me. i don’t want to show anything yet because in the past one or two people have seen what i made for them here on the blog before i actually managed to give it to them. so i’ve learned my lesson and any posting on gifts will just have to wait.

vecchie lenzuola salvate! - old bedsheets saved from the bin!

avevo delle lenzuola molto usate e molto amate (parliamo di decenni di anni di uso continuo da me e i miei fratelli) con dei fumetti di snoopy che mi sono sempre piaciute molto. solo che il lenzuolo con gli angoli che va direttamente sul materasso era molto consumato in mezzo e andava un po’ piccolo sul materasso di mia figlia. quindi ho deciso di recuperarle in diversi progetti.

i had some very used and loved bedsheets (we’re talking decades of continuous use by my siblings and me) with peanuts vignettes on them which i have always loved. except that the fitted bottom sheet was very worn out in the center and was a little too small to fit around my daughter’s mattress. so i decided to recuperate the sheets for a few different projects.

abbiamo sempre molto bisogno di contenitori per i giocattoli. quindi ho preso una di quelle cassette per la frutta (che le persone ci danno piene di cose dai loro giardini, ma non le vogliono mai indietro, non ho mai capito perché) che stava da un anno sul balcone.

we always need containers for toys in our apartment. so i took one of those plastic fruit crates (that people give us full of things from their gardens but which they never want back, i have no idea why not) which had been on our balcony for the past year.

l’ho lavato e ho fatto una fodera con il lenzuolo con gli angoli. ho tolto da mezzo la parte molto consumata, ma anche il resto del tessuto era diventato un po’ sottile (ma con i disegni ancora buoni), quindi l’ho rinforzato con la tela termo-adesivo sul retro. si apre su tre lati sul fondo per infilare la cassetta (e per toglierla per lavarla) e si chiude con dei bottoncini a pressione.

i washed it and made a removable cover for it with the fitted sheet. i removed the part that was the most worn out, but even the rest of the fabric had gotten a bit thin (although the drawings were still in good condition), so i reinforced it with heavy-weight iron-on interfacing on the back. it opens on three sides on the bottom to fit over the crate (and to take off the cover and wash it) and it closes up with snaps.

ci vanno un sacco di giocattoli e, visto che ne ho altre due di queste cassette e si possono impilare una sopra l’altra per conservare lo spazio prezioso della cameretta, vorrei foderare anche quelle. ma proverò senza la tela termo-adesivo perché non sono convinta alla fine che sia stata necessaria.

a good amount of toys fit inside it and, seeing as i have two more of these crates and they can be stacked one on top of the other to save the precious space in my daughter’s bedroom, i want to make covers for those, too. but next time i’m trying without the interfacing because i’m not convinced that it was really necessary.

poi, con il resto di quel lenzuolo con gli angoli ho fatto una federa per un cuscino da letto (ce n’era già una in origine, ma non ho idea che fine ha fatto). e con il lenzuolo di sopra (che era ancora in buone condizioni) e un’altro lenzuolo bianco che avevamo in più ho fatto un copripiumino. (scusate la foto, ma con tutta questa pioggia, non arriva molta luce fino al letto.) c’è una linea sotto i fumetti perché ho dovuto spostarli (in origine stavano in basso del lenzuolo in modo che si potessero vedere quando venisse piegato sopra le coperte). ma non mi da fastidio. e mia figlia è contentissima!

then, with the rest of the fitted sheet, i made a bed pillowcase (there was one originally in the set, but i have no idea what happened to it). and with the top sheet (which was still in good condition) and another plain white sheet we had hanging around, i made a down comforter cover. (pardon the photo, but with all the rain we’ve been getting, there isn’t a lot of light where the bed is.) there’s a line under the drawings because i had to move them up on the cover (they were originally at the bottom of the sheet so that you could see them at the top of the bed when folded up and over the bed covers). but it doesn’t bother me at all. and my little girl is super happy!

visto che questo lenzuolo era più largo di quello che serviva per il copripiumino e rimaneva una figura di linus, l’ho usato per fare un piccolo cuscino. solo che lo devo ancora imbottire, quindi non ho ancora la foto.

seeing as the top sheet was wider than what i needed for the comforter cover and there was an extra vignette of linus that got cut off, i used it to make a little pillow. except i still have to stuff it, so i don’t have a picture yet.

insomma, sono molto soddisfatta! da un set di lenzuola che una persona normale avrebbe buttato, sapendo che aveva avuto una lunga vita, ho ricavato ben quattro cose di cui avevamo bisogno in modo completamente recuperato!

and so, i must say that i’m quite happy! from a set of bedsheets that any normal person would’ve thrown out, knowing that they had had a long life, i made four things that we needed without using any new materials!

un amico mi ha mandato il link ad una notizia molto interessante: una vincitrice del premio Curry Stone Design 2010 è stata una tale Elizabeth Scharpf e il suo SHE (Sustainable Health Enterprises). perché, che hanno fatto? hanno creato un sistema di microindustria locale in rwanda fatto di donne locali. e che producono? gli assorbenti mestruali fatti dalle fibre di banane, un prodotto locale.

a friend of mine sent me a link to a very interesting bit of news: one of the winnders of the Curry Stone Design Prize 2010 was a certain Elizabeth Scharpf and her SHE (Sustainable Health Enterprises). why, what did they do? they created a system of local micro-industry in rwanda with local women. and what do they produce? menstrual pads made from fibers a local plant: bananas.

è lo stesso discorso di cui ho già scritto in precedenza: in molti posti del terzo mondo, le ragazze e donne, non avendo delle possibilità di gestire il ciclo mestruale, perdono diversi giorni al mese dalla scuola o dal lavoro. ma invece di usufruire della donazione di assorbenti mestruali lavabili da altri paese (una cosa in cui partecipo anch’io), SHE crea dei sistemi di produzione sul posto in modo di non solo risolvere questo problema, ma anche di creare lavoro e dare più potere alle donne. per aiutare con questa iniziativa, basta donare $28 (circa €20) alla campagna di SHE28, vedere il filmato o diventare fan su facebook.

it’s the same story that i’ve already written about: in many third world countries, girls and women, not having a way to deal with their menstrual period, miss several days a month from school or work. but instead of taking advantage of the donation of cloth menstrual pads from other countries (something that i participate in, too), SHE funds start up businesses in these areas so as to not only solve this problem, but also create jobs and empower women. to help out with this initiative, all you need to do is donate $28 to the SHE28 campaign , watch the video or become a fan on facebook.

distanze - distances

ci sono tantissimi bei aspetti del vivere in un posto lontano da dove si è cresiuto. si impara, si apre e si cresce in continuazione. ma ci sono anche delle grandissime difficoltà, una delle quali è la lontananza dalla famiglia di origine e carissimi amici. ho perso tanti di quei momenti importanti dei miei cari: matrimoni, divorzi, nascite, morti, e tutto il resto. ma questi giorni per me sono probabilmente quelli più difficili che ho passato negli ultimi 9 anni trascorsi qui in italia. perché è venuta a mancare mia amatissima nonna di 93 anni e, per non rischiare problemi con la mia gravidanza in corsa, non ho potuto prendere il primo volo negli stati uniti per salutarla nei suoi ultimi momenti nè stare al funerale.

there are so many great things about living in a place far from where you’re from. you constantly learn, open up and grow. but there are also great difficulties, the biggest of which is the distance from your family and dearest friends. i’ve missed out on loads of those important moments in the lives of those dearest to me: weddings, divorces, births, deaths, and all the rest. but these days have probably been the most difficult that i’ve had in the past 9 years that i’ve spent here in italy. this is because my beloved 93-year-old grandmother passed away and, to avoid risking problems with my pregnancy, i couldn’t jump on the first plane to the united states to say goodbye to her in her last moments or to attend her funeral.

mia nonna è stata come una seconda mamma per me. ho tanti di quei ricordi di lei che mi fanno sorridere, crepare dalle risate o semplicemente stare bene. ma le cose più belle non si possono raccontare come un aneddoto. quali parole esistono per descrivere l’amore e la vicinanza che mi ha sempre dato e che ho sempre sentito nei suoi confronti? soffro tanto per il fatto che non c’è più (e, non essendo credente, non mi posso confortare con l’idea che la rivedrò di nuovo uno di questi giorni). mi manca tantissimo la mia famiglia di origine, con cui vorrei stare in questo momento difficile, e mi sento impotente al non poter fare niente da dove sono io. le distanze a volte sono molto difficili. ma per fortuna l’amore non conosce nè distanze nè tempo e lo so che la amerò per sempre e mi riterrò sempre molto fortunata di averla avuto nella mia vita.

my grandmother was like a second mother to me. i have so many memories of her that make me smile, laugh uncontrollably or just feel happy inside. but the best things can’t be told like a simple anecdote. what words could possibly describe the love and closeness that she always gave me and that i always felt towards her? it’s a terrible feeling knowing that she isn’t here anymore (and, not being religious, i can’t comfort myself with the idea that i will see her again one of these days). i miss my family so much and want so much to be with them during this difficult moment and i feel absolutely impotent, not being able to do anything from where i am. distances can sometimes be really, really hard. but luckily love doesn’t suffer from distance or time and i know that i’ll always love my grandmother and i’ll always feel fortunate to have had her in my life.

dopo mesi (anni?) che continuavo a dire che li avrei messo in vendita online, i pannolini cucicucicoo finalmente sono pronti per la vendita nel mio negozio online di misshobby. attualmente produco due tipi di pannolini: gli AIO (tutto-in-uno) ed i pocket (tasca). il primo tipo è molto simile nell’uso e struttura dei pannolini usa e getta, quindi facilissimi da usare. i pocket, invece, hanno bisogno di un inserto, ma sono anche loro facili da usare e più versatili. per sapere di più sui pannolini, guarda la pagina sui pannolini lavabili.

after months (years?) of saying that i’d put them up for sale online, my cucicucicoo cloth diapers are finally up and ready for sale on my online store, misshobby. i currently make two types of diapers: AIO (all-in-one) and pocket diapers. the first type is very similar in use and structure to disposable diapers, and therefore quite easy to use. pocket diapers, on the other hand, need an insert, but are also very easy to use and also more versatile. to find out more about cucicucicoo diapers, please see the page on cloth diapers.

fin’ora avevo solo venduto i pannolini in persona o per richiesta specifica. come ho già scritto in passato, partecipavo per un periodo (fino a quando sono rimasta incinta ed ero troppo stanca!) ai mercatini mensili della ragnatela nella zona di napoli. ho da poco scoperto delle foto di alcuni di questi mercati in cui ci sono anch’io, e quindi volevo condividere. le seguenti si trovano nella galleria foto del sito della ragnatela.

until now i’d only sold my diapers in person or by specific request. as i’ve already written in the past, for a while (until i got pregnant and was too tired!) i participated in the monthly markets la ragnatela in and around naples. i recently discovered some photos of some of these markets in which you can see me with my stand, so i decided to share them with you. the following are from the photo gallery on the ragnatela’s site.

here, on the other hand, is the big genuino clandestino market in rome in april 2010. i know it’s nearly impossible to find me here (i’m in the middle of the three rows of white tents and the porta-potties), but it gives a good idea of the situation, even if it shows only a portion of the stands present that day.

gioielli di semi di melone - melon seed jewelry

quando ho visto queste collane, mi sono innamorata subito! ho scoperto il blog di maya (e le collane) grazie a quello di linda. mi sono detta che non potevo non provarci anch’io.

when i saw these necklaces, it was love at first sight! i discovered maya’s blog (and the necklaces) thanks to linda’s blog. i told myself that i just HAD to give it a go myself.

è molto semplice: basta togliere i semi da un melone (io ho usato dei meloni con la buccia gialla), lavarli con un po’ di sapone o detersivo per i piatti liquido e farli asciugare. poi si colorono come ti pare. a me è piaciuto molto l’effetto di quelle di maya colorando solo metà di ogni seme e lasciando alcuni senza colore. ho anche messo alcune perline di legno non verniciato (alcuni delle quali ho colorato). volevo copiare l’effetto di maya con le perline grosse, ma non sono riuscita a trovarle. peccato, perché non sono venute belle le collane come le sue.

it’s quite simple: just remove the seeds from a melon (i used those melons that are yellow outside), wash them with some liquid soap or dish detergent and let them dry. then you color them however you want. i really liked the effect maya got coloring only half of each seed and leaving some uncolored. i also used some non-varnished wooden beads (some of which i colored). i wanted to repeat maya’s effect with big wooden beads, but i couldn’t find any around here. it’s a shame because mine didn’t come out as wonderful as hers.

per farle, ho usato un ago e del filo trasparente. poi mi è venuta l’idea di fare anche un bracialetto, che secondo me sta bene senza le perline grandi.

to string them up, i used a needle and transparent thread (like a thin fishing line). then i thought that i could also make a bracelet which, in my opinion, looks quite nice without the big beads.

maya ha scritto che in passato usava dello smalto per le unghie per colorare i semi ma ora, che non ha tanto tempo, usa i pennarelli. quindi ho provato tutti e due i metodi. quelli arancioni sono con lo smalto e quelli viola con un pennarello permanente (i molto amati sharpies). in effetti, con il pennarello si va MOLTO più veloce perché si possono colorare i semi e perline tutti in una volta. con lo smalto, invece, si deve fare prima un lato, farli asciugare, e poi fare l’altro lato. ho dovuto usare le pinze per tenerle mentre le coloravo. e con queste perline piccoline è stato un mezzo disastro con lo smalto. poi dopo un po’ di tempo, lo smalto comincia a farsi molto denso e difficile da usare. (ho sentito in passato di un modo per rendere di nuovo più liquido lo smalto diventato denso, ma non mi ricordo come si fa. qualcuno di voi sa come fare?)

maya wrote that in the past she used nail polish to color the seeds but, now that she doesn’t have as much time on her hands, she uses markers. so i tried both ways. the orange ones are with nail polish and the purple ones with permanent marker (the much-loved sharpies). she’s right; using markers you can go a LOT faster because you can color the seeds and beads all at once. with nail polish, on the other hand, you have to do one side, let it dry and then do the other side. i had to use tweezers to hold them while painting. painting these little beads was a total disaster because i couldn’t hold onto them well enough, not even with tweezers. and then, after a while, the nail polish starts getting thick and stringy and very hard to use. (i’ve heard of a way to thin out thick nail polish, but i can’t remember how it’s done. do any of you know how?)

***nota successiva: maya mi ha scritto che un modo molto più facile per colorare le perline piccole con lo smalto è di metterli sugli stuzzicadenti inficcati in una bacheca di sughero (o io farei in un pezzo di polistirolo). ci proverò così la prossima volta!***

***update: maya told me that putting the little beads on a toothpick stuck into a corkboard (or i would try in styrofoam packaging) makes it much easier to paint them with nailpolish. i will definitely be using that trick next time!***

ma alla fine, ho preferito il metodo con lo smalto perché il colore è più brillante e dà un effetto più bello, secondo me. in più, ho scoperto dopo qualche giorno di uso che il colore dai semi e le perline colorati con il pennarello permanente è cominciato a passare anche ai semi e perline senza colore. evidentemente, non si assorbe mai completamente. non so se è un difetto delle pennarelle che ho usato io, ma ora vorrei rifare quella collana con lo smalto viola. poi ho pensato che si potrebbero fare anche dei bei orecchini con i semi. forse li farò quando rifaccio la collana viola…

but in the end, i preferred the method with nail polish because the color is brighter and shinier and makes for a nicer effect, in my opinion. also, i discovered after a few days of using these that the color from the seeds and beads colored with the permanent marker started smudging off onto the seeds and a beads without color. apparently it never got completely absorbed. i don’t know if this is a defect just with the brand of markers that i used, but i would like to redo that necklace with purple nail polish. then i thought that you could also make nice little earrings with these seeds. maybe i’ll try that out when i remake my purple necklace…

top per la gravidanza - wrap around maternity top

ho visto questo top segnalato da linda mesi fa, prima di restare incinta, ma mi era piaciuto tanto e, visto che speravo tanto di avere un altro figlio, l’ho messo nei segnalibri. e meno male! è stato un progetto facile e mette in rilievo la pancia (invece di farmi sembrare una balena come molti vestiti premaman!).

i first saw this shirt on linda’s blog months ago before getting pregnant, but i really liked the idea a lot and, seeing as i was hoping to have another baby, i bookmarked it. and good thing! it was a pretty easy project and it shows off the pregnant belly (instead of making the mother look like a whale like most maternity clothes!).

è un peccato che non ne ho scritto prima, perché ora comincia a fare un po’ di freddino per usarlo (l’ho fatto in estate), ma sarebbe molto facile allungare le maniche e si può sempre abbinare con qualcosa di più pesante sopra. con questo modello si avvolgono due lunghissime strisce intorno alla pancia, quindi ti andrà sempre perfettamente, che tu sia nel 3° o nel 9° mese. l’unico problema che ho trovato è che a volte si spostano le strisce e ne esce da sotto la parte più bassa del pezzo della schiena (perché sono sull’altina), ma si potrebbe rimediare facilmente allungando quel pezzo un pochino.

it’s a shame that i didn’t write about this sooner because now it’s starting to get a bit chilly to use this (i made it this summer), but it would be very easy to make the sleeves longer and you can always put a cute bolero or something warmer on top of it. this pattern has two very long strips of fabric which are wound around the belly, so it will always fit you perfectly, whether you’re in your 3rd or 9th month. the only problem i had was that sometimes the strips move around a little and the bottom of the back piece can slip out from under them (because i’m on the tall side), but this can be easily fixed by lengthening that piece a bit when cutting out your fabric.

un’altra cosa che ho imparato: è MOLTO consigliabile usare il jersey di una tinta unita che quindi sarà dello stesso colore sia davanti che dietro. ho usato questa fantasia che avevo comprato al mercato più di un anno fa, ma le strisce tendono a rotolarsi lungo i bordi. con una tinta unita non sarebbe un problema, ma le stoffe in fantasie hanno un retro di un colore diverso e le fantasie sfumate, quindi si vede moltissimo quando le strisce si girano un pochino ai bordi.

another thing that i learned: it’s MUCH better if you use a solid colored jersey fabric that is the same color on both the front and back. i used this printed jersey that i bought at the market for a steal more than a year ago, but the strips tend to roll over a little on the edges. with a solid color it wouldn’t be an issue, but fabrics with a print on them have a backside with a different color and faded-looking print, so it’s very obvious when the strips roll over even just a little.

l’ho rimediato un po’ girando i bordi lungo tutta la maglietta e fissandoli con lo zig zag (questo progetto prevede che tagli i bordi senza cucirli perché il jersey non si sfila in lavatrice). e devo dire che lo preferisco così perché comunque non mi fa impazzire di avere un pezzo non completamente finito.
te lo consiglio per te o le tue amiche incinte! fammi sapere se lo provi anche tu!

i fixed this issue somewhat by folding over the edges all the way around the shirt and using a zig zag stitch (for this project you just cut the edges without sewing them because jersey doesn’t fray in the wash). and i must say that i prefer it like this anyway because i felt like it just wasn’t finished without hemming somewhat.

so i super advise this pattern for you or any of your pregnant friends! let me know if you try it, too!

inserti per i pannolini a tasca - inserts for pocket diapers

attualmente produco due tipi di pannolini lavabili: i tutto-in-uno e i pannolini a tasca. quelli tutto in uno sono quelli più semplici da usare perché sono i più simili in struttura ed uso ai pannolini usa e getta.

these days i make two types of cloth diapers: all-in-ones (AIO) and pocket diapers. AIOs are the easiest to use because they’re the closest thing to disposables in terms of structure and use.

quelli a tasca, invece, sono vuoti all’interno e hanno bisogno di un’inserto per assorbire la pipì. si inserisce questo inserto all’interno del pannolino attraverso l’apertura sulla schiena del pannolino. il bello di questo sistema sono veramente diversi “belli”:

dopo il lavaggio, l’inserto aperto e il pannolino vuoto si asciugano molto presto.
si può aggiustare il livello di assorbenza semplicemente inserendo 2 inserti invece di uno, molto utile per la notte.
ce ne sono solo 2 taglie di inserti cucicucicoo per le 4 taglie di pannolini e quindi non se ne devono comprare nuovi per ogni cambio di taglia. (e in verità, uno potrebbe anche usare gli stracci, vecchi asciugamani ecc. che ha già a casa invece degli inserti cucicucicoo per risparmiare di più.)
essendo molto meno lavorati, i pannolini a tasca e i loro inserti costano molto di meno dei tutto-in-uno.

pocket diapers, on the other hand, are empty on the inside and need an insert to absorb all the pee. you slip this insert inside the diaper through an opening on the diaper’s back. there are quite a few nice things about this system:

after washing, the unfolded insert and empty diaper dry very quickly.
you can adjust the absorbency level simply by using 2 inserts instead of one, which can be very useful, especially at night.
there are only 2 cucicucicoo insert sizes for the 4 sizes of diapers so there’s no need to buy new ones for every size change. (and really, you could also just use rags, old towels, etc. already hanging around your home instead of using cucicucicoo inserts to save even more.)
being much less labor-intensive to create, pocket diapers and their inserts cost considerably less than AIOs.

gli inserti cucicucicoo sono fatti di 3 stoffe, tutti quanti con il certificato oeko-tex e con grande capacità di assorbenza, tutti e tre morbidissime e ecologiche: spugna di bambù (45% bambù; 45% cotone biologico; 10% poliestere), pile di bambù (70% bambù; 30% cotone biologico)e pile di canapa (55% canapa; 45% cotone biologico).

cucicucicoo inserts are made from three different fabrics, all of them with the oeko-tex certificate and very absorbent, all three super soft and environmentally friendly: bamboo terry (45% bamboo; 45% organic cotton; 10% polyester), bamboo fleece (70% bamboo; 30% organic cotton) and hemp fleece (55% hemp; 45% organic cotton).

le due taglie sono: S-M (per i pannolini a tasca cucicucicoo di taglia S e M) e L-XL (per i pannolini a tasca cucicucicoo di taglia L e XL).

come si piegano gli inserti cucicucicoo?
1. piega l’inserto due volte per fare un rettangolo di 4 strati. per l’inserto S-M si fa nel senso della lunghezza. per l’inserto L-XL è uguale, trattandosi di una forma quadrata.

how do you fold cucicucicoo inserts?

1. fold the insert two times to make a 4-layered rectangle. the long sides of the S-M insert should be folded. for the L-XL insert it doesn’t matter from which side you fold, as it is a square shape.

2. apri l’apertura sulla schiena del pannolino e inserisci il rettangolo fino in fondo. mentri togli la mano dall’interno, sistema l’inserto con la mano in modo che stia abbastanza piatto. (nonostante i disegni, è consigliabile piegare il velcro sulle ali su se stesso per non farlo attaccare ad altri parti del pannolino e/o inserto, come si fa durante il lavaggio.)

2. open the opening on the diaper’s back and insert the rectangle all the way to the bottom. while removing your hand from inside the diaper, flatten out the insert with your hand. (despite the illustrations, it’s better if you fold the velcro on the wings down on themselves so they don’t stick to other parts of the diaper and/or insert, as you would for washing them.)
3. l’inserto probabilmente resterà un po’ fuori l’apertura. quindi prendi ciascun lato del pannolino con le mani e tira leggermente.

3. the insert will probably still stick out a bit from the opening. therefore hold each end of the diaper with your hands and pull gently.

4. tenendo ancora il pannolino con le mani, smetti di tirare. l’inserto verrà tirato da solo dentro il pannolino correttamente senza che ne fuoriesce.

4. still holding the diaper with your hands, stop pulling. the insert will get pulled inside correctly without any of it sticking out anymore.

come si lavano gli inserti cucicucicoo?
è semplicissimo…quando il pannolino è sporco, si toglie l’inserto dall’interno, si mette dove si mettono tutti i pannolini sporchi, e si lava insieme a tutti i pannolini. non potrebbe essere più facile! (per le informazioni dettagliate sull’uso e il lavaggio dei pannolini, guardate qui.)

how do you wash cucicucicoo inserts?

la bellezza di essere mamma - the wonders of being a mamma

sto passando un periodo difficile con mia figlia. sta trascorrendo una fase molto disubbidiente e si sta comportando in generale in modo un po’ strano. sto cominciando ad impazzirmi con la situazione e a dubitare le mie capacità, ma poi vengono quei momenti che mi fanno scoppiare il cuore di un amore intenso. ed ecco uno di quei momenti.

i’m going through a rough spot with my daughter. she’s going through yet another very disobedient phase and is acting very strangely in general. i’m starting to lose it with the situation and to doubt my parenting capabilities, but then one of those moments comes along that just makes my heart burst with an immense love for her. and here’s one of those moments.

chiunque è genitore saprà com’è bello quando il figlio si appassiona per conto suo di una cosa che già appassiona il genitore. è già da tempo che a mia figlia piace molto frugare per tutta la mia collezione di tessuti e che esprime il desiderio di imparare a cucire anche lei.

any parent knows how great it is when his/her child starts to develop a passion on his own for something that the parent already very much enjoys. my daughter has already loved going through my fabric collection and has mentioned how she wants to learn how to sew, too, for a while.

io tengo delle buste piene di pezzetti di stoffa rimaste dai miei progetti cuciti per imbottire altri progetti (tipo questo cuscino, che solo ora vedo di aver scritto male nel post originale…oops!) o per far riciclare. la mia sofia spesso fruga dentro queste buste e trova “copertine,” “vestiti,” o altre cose fra questi pezzetti da usare con i suoi giocattoli. mi fa ricordare che veramente non c’è bisogno di chissà quali giocattoli per i bambini, basta quello che si trova in giro e un po’ di immaginazione e creatività. (fruga spesso anche fra il mio cartone pieno di cose recuperate per altri progetti, tipo tappi di bottiglie, tetrapak, retine dell’aglio, ecc, e ci gioca con i contenuti.)

i have some bags full of fabric scraps left over from my projects to stuff other projects (such as this pillow) or to recycle. my little sofia often rummages around in these bags and finds “blankets,” “clothes,” and other things among these scraps to use with her toys. it reminds me that kids really don’t need any sort of fancy toys, but just whatever they can find hanging around and a bit of imagination and creativity. (she also frequently rummages through my big box of things i put aside for other projects, like bottle caps, tetrapak boxes, garlic netting, etc, and plays with what she finds there.)

recentemente ho cucito diversi set di coppette assorbilatte per il mio negozio, che sono a forma conica. quando sofia ha trovato i triangoli rimasti dal fare questa forma, si è scatenata per giorni! ma guarda che bei tappettini e lettini che ha fatto! quanto sono orgogliosa della testolina della mia piccina…il cuore non riesce a contenere l’amore che sento per lei in questi momenti!

i recently sewed up a bunch of sets of nursing pads for my store, which are slightly conical in shape. when sofia found the triangles left over from making those shapes, she went all out with them for days! just look at what pretty rugs and beds she made! i feel so proud of my little girl’s mind…my heart just isn’t big enough to hold all the love i feel for her in these moments!

pantaloni premaman fai-da-te - diy maternity pants

quando ero incinta di mia figlia, non ho dovuto comprare (nè usare) molti vestiti premaman perché ho partorito ad estate e usato molte gonne tipo pareo sotto la pancia (che è sempre stata alta) e non mi importava minimamente di lasciar uscire fuori un po’ di pancione dalle magliette normali. questa volta dovrei partorire a fine dicembre, quindi mi sa che i parei e pance fuori non andranno tanto bene. fra non tanto dovrò trovar qualche soluzione più coprente.

when i was pregnant with my daughter, i didn’t really need to buy (or use) many maternity clothes because she was born in the summer and i used a lot of beach wrap-around skirts under my belly (which was always high) and i wasn’t at all bothered by my tummy poking out from under regular shirts. this time i’ll be giving birth at the end of december, so i have a feeling that those flimsy wrap-arounds and tummies sticking out just aren’t going to cut it. pretty soon, i’ll have to start finding some more covering solutions.

dunque, dovevo assolutamente fare qualcosa con i miei jeans premaman dalla mia prima gravidanza, che mi serviranno molto spesso. qualche stilista della catena prenatal ha combinato un disastro con questi jeans (anche se ho un’altro pantalone loro che è comodissimo). a parte il fatto che vanno troppo, troppo alto sia dietro che davanti e il cavallo è un po’ strano (non si vede in questa foto), hanno messo quel tipo di elastico con i bottoni che puoi man mano allargare per la pancia che cresce. solo che l’elastico è troppo stretto e si è piegato dentro, lasciandomi con un elastico largo neanche 1 cm che cerca di tenere su un pantalone in una delle parti più larghe della pancia. camminando solo un metro già cominciavano a scendere. mi facevano uscire pazza e dovevo assolutamente risolvere il problema.

so, i absolutely needed to do something with my maternity jeans from my first pregnancy, which i’ll be needing a lot this time around. some stylist from the italian chain store prenatal made a huge mess out of these jeans (although i do have another pair of pants from those stores which is very comfortable). besides the fact that they go way too high up the back and the belly and the crotch is cut in a very weird way (but you can’t really tell from this photo), they put that type of elastic with buttons that you can let out as your tummy grows. except they used a much too narrow elastic and it folded over itself inside the pants, leaving me with an elastic that isn’t even 1 cm wide attempting to hold up the pants in one of the widest parts of my tummy. just walking a meter they would start to slip down. they were driving me completely nuts and i absolutely needed to fix the problem.

per fortuna, avevo visto molti tutorial nel web su come modificare i pantaloni normali con un po’ di jersey o anche una maglietta vecchia e un elastico largo. sono meravigliosi e facilissimi da fare. ad esempio, qui, qui, qui, qui, qui, qui e qui. ma non mi andava proprio di usare un altro elastico che potrebbe sempre fare lo stesso fine di quello nei miei jeans, ripiegandosi, e quindi ho seguito più o meno quest’altro tutorial, senza elastico, con qualche modifica.

luckily i had seen a lot of online tutorials on how to make maternity pants from regular pants and a bit of jersey or even an old t-shirt and a wide elastic. they’re very cool and easy to do. for example, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. but i didn’t really want to use another elastic that could possibly roll over itself like in my jeans, so i more or less followed this other tutorial, without elastic, with a change or two.

1. trova una maglietta di jersey che non ti serve più. quella che ho scelto io era di poliestere (quindi si era fatta brutta molto presto) e troppo corta. togli il bordo cucito in basso e poi fa un taglio sotto le ascelle.

1. find a jersey shirt that you don’t need anymore. i used a polyester one which had gotten worn out pretty quickly and was too short. cut off the bottom hem and then cut across under the armpits.

2. con la striscia di maglietta al rovescio, taglia una striscia laterale (preferibilmente dal lato con l’etichetta) e cuci di nuovo. la macchina taglia-cuci è ottima per questo progetto, ma si può anche usare una macchina normale con lo zig zag e un ago con la punta a sfera (per il jersey). piega la striscia a metà (come nella foto sotto) e prova intorno alla pancia. la vorrai abbastanza stretta perché dovrà sorreggere il pantalone. la prima volta mi andava troppo larga, quindi l’ho tagliata ancora più stretta. avrei dovuto farla ancora più stretta, a dire la verità, ma non fa niente.

2. with your strip of shirt inside out, cut a strip off the side of it (preferably the side with the tag) and sew it up again. a serger is wonderful for this project, but you can also use a regular sewing machine with a zig zag stitch and a ballpoint needle (for jersey). fold the strip in half (as in the photo below) and try it on around your belly. you’ll want it relatively tight because it’ll have to hold up your pants. the first time mine was too loose, so i did it again. i really should’ve taken even more off the side, but that’s ok.

3. when you have it the right width for your tummy, fold it in half with the right sides out. i then passed it through the serger again to keep the bottom edges together for the next step, but it’s not totally necessary. you’ll end up with something like a loop of two layers of jersey.

4. ora il pantalone. prendi qualunque pantalone che hai che non ti servirà più quando avrai di nuovo il tuo profilo normale e togli la parte superiore. bisognerà tagliare abbastanza in basso davanti e togliere lo zip se c’è. per questo, vi consiglio di guardare le foto nei tutorial che ho già segnalato sopra perché, avendo un jeans già premaman, l’ho tagliato in modo diverso e lo zip è finto (e anche le tasche, una cosa che mi dà molto fastidio!). anche se, mi sono resa conto dopo che dovevo tagliare ancora più in basso davanti nonostante fosse già un modello premaman, quindi ho tolto quello che avevo cucito e l’ho abbassato ancora (ma non ho fatto la foto del taglio finale). poi prova il pantalone. dovrebbe venire un po’ sotto la pancia. se non fa così, taglia ancora davanti.

4. now for your pants. take some pants that you won’t be wanting anymore even after you get your old figure back and cut off the waistband. you’ll also need to cut pretty low in front and take out the zipper if there is one. for this part, i suggest that you take a look at the photos in the other tutorials that i linked to above because, having jeans that were already made for a belly, i didn’t have to cut as low in front and the zipper is fake (as well as the pockets, which drives me nuts!). however, i realized afterwards that i should’ve cut lower in front, so i had to undo my sewing and redo it lower (though i didn’t take a picture of how it was cut in the end, sorry!). then try on the pants. they should come up to just under your belly. if they don’t, cut lower.

5. infila il pantalone dentro il cerchio di jersey e fa combaciare i bordi tagliati/cuciti delle due stoffe. è un po’ scocciante perché il pantalone sarà molto più largo del jersey, ma tira il jersey in modo di fissare le stoffe con gli spilli ad intervalli regolari.

5. stick the pants inside the jersey loop and match up the cut/sewn edges of the two fabrics. this part is a bit annoying because the pants are much wider than the jersey, but just stretch the jersey so you can pin it at regular intervals.

6. then sew the edges together. again, i used my serger, but you can also use a regular sewing machine. it will ruffle up a bit, but it’s not a problem.

7. i suggest doing a zig zag stitch (or the serger) around the edges to keep the fabrics together and to keep the pant fabric from fraying in the wash (jersey doesn’t fray). then to reinforce, i also did a regular straight stitch just below that.

8. tira su il jersey, e hai finito!

normally maternity shirts will cover the jersey strip, but if they don’t, you get the effect of a scarf belt or something like that. i’ve already used my modified jeans a few days and i’m quite happy with them!

normalmente non scrivo di cose controverse, tipo la religione o la politica, qui anche se a volte ho delle opinioni molto decisi perché non mi pare il caso e non è mai stato il mio scopo fare così. ma ho appena letto l’intervista di rolling stone ad obama e ve lo volevo segnalare nel caso che c’è qualcuno che legge l’inglese e se ne interessa.

normally i don’t write about controversial things, such as religion or politics, here even though i sometimes do have very strong opinions about them because it just doesn’t seem the right place and that was never my goal in creating this blog. however i’ve just read rolling stone’s interview of obama and i wanted to advise any of my readers who know english and are interested to check it out (or even better, purchase the magazine to read the article, which i can’t do here where i live).

la maggior parte dei cittadini statunitensi sono molto orgogliosi di esserlo, ma diciamo che io non lo sono sempre stata. infatti quando mi sono trasferita in italia nel 2001, spesso dicevo alle persone che sapevo che non avrei mai più visto (e quindi a cui non importava tanto di dire la verità completa) di essere canadese per evitare di sentire tutto quello che pensavano sulla politica statunitense. e anche perché mi vergognavo di essere associata con le scelte fatte dal mio paese.

most US citizens are very proud of being just that, but i haven’t always felt that way. when i moved to italy in 2001, i frequently told people who i knew i wouldn’t be seeing again (and therefore didn’t need to tell the exact truth to) that i was canadian in order to avoid hearing all their thoughts on US politics. and also because i was quite frankly embarrassed to be associated with the decisions made by my country.

per fortuna, da quando c’è obama, è tutto diverso e mi sento fiera di essere una dei tantissimi americani che l’hanno eletto. mi dispiace davvero tanto quando viene criticato per non aver ancora combinato tanto di quello che aveva promesso, perché non è così. sta facendo delle cose incredibili che sinceramente non pensavo possibile in questi anni, e sono sicurissima che ne farà ancora tantissimo.

luckily, since obama’s been in the picture, everything’s changed and i feel quite proud to be one of the many US citizens who voted for him. i really hate to hear him be criticized for not having done many things that he’d promised, because that’s generally not the case. he’s been doing some really incredible things that i honestly didn’t think were possible these days and i’m sure that he’ll continue to do a lot more.

comunque, ho voluto segnalare questa intervista perché si fa capire molto bene quanto è un leader intelligente e capace, per non parlare della sua umanità e simpatia (mi ha fatto ridere sapere che a lui piacerebbe portare i calzini a strisce colorate, come porto io, se non fosse presidente!). e basta! non vi preoccupate, non ho intenzioni di rompervi le scatole con la politica! buona domenica!

già natale?! - christmas already?!

sì, sto già pensando a natale. di solito comincio a pensare ai regali verso il 20 dicembre, ma questo anno no! visto che il mio piccino dovrebbe in teoria fare il suo arrivo il 30 dicembre, preferisco una volta tanto sistemare tutto prima.

yep, i’m already thinking about christmas. i generally start thinking about gifts around december 20th, but not this year! seeing as my munchkin should in theory make his debut december 30th, i’d rather get everything taken care of earlier for once.

ho fatto questa collana con i ferri, filato di cotone e perline in poco tempo. ho trovato il progetto nel libro 101 designer yarn stash wonders ed è stato il primo progetto ai ferri che sono mai riuscita a fare che non è un rettangolo. che soddisfazione! quindi ho pensato che potrebbe essere un regalo gradito da diverse persone a natale. che ne pensate? ho anche pensato che questo anno regalerò alle maestre di mia figlia dei sottobicchiere con il foglio lavagna (tipo quelli che ho inviato a maria per lo swap). per gli altri, non ho ancora deciso. ho visto che alessia ha in vendita lo schema per un cestino portattutto molto carino che farebbe molto piacere a diverse persone, ma non so fare l’uncinetto. però vorrei mettermi ad imparare con le lezioni di uncinetto di alessia stessa. vediamo se ci riesco in tempo. ne dubito!

i knit this necklace with cotton yarn and beads pretty quickly. i found the project in the book 101 designer yarn stash wonders and it was the first knitting project i ever did that wasn’t a rectangle. how exciting! so i thought that it could be a nice gift for a few people at christmas. what do you think? i also thought that this year i could give my daughter’s teachers the same sort of chalk cloth coasters that i sent maria for the swap. for everyone else, i don’t know. i saw that alessia is selling the pattern for a cool basket that i bet a lot of people would like to receive, but i don’t know how to crochet. i hope to learn with the crochet lessons that alessia herself has. we’ll see if i manage to learn in time. i doubt it!

sto pensando anche ad un’altra cosa: i pacchi regalo. non compro mai carta per i regali ma uso esclusivamente i pezzi che sono già stati usati per noi o che rimangono in giro alle feste e raccolgo. ho una raccolta piuttosto grande di carte facendo così. ma sto pensando di cominciare a fare e regalare (come parte del regalo) i furoshiki, per cercare di sensibilizzare le persone che mi sono vicine sullo spreco delle carte da regalo. si tratta di una tecnica giapponese: uno semplice quadrato di stoffa che si piega in modi diversi per creare dei pacchi molto belli e anche ecologici, visto che si riutilizzano tante volte. per saperne di più, si può leggere qui e qui (o in tanti altri posti). un’ottima idea, non vi pare?!

i’ve also been thinking about something else: gift wrapping. i never buy gift wrapping, but only reuse pieces that were given to us or that i save from parties or get togethers. i have a pretty big collection of wrapping paper by doing this. but i’m thinking that this year i want to start making and giving furoshiki to try to help educate people around me about the waste of gift wrapping. it’s a japanese technique: a simple fabric square which can be folded in different ways to make very pretty packages which are also very ecological, seeing as they are reused many, many times. google it… i think they’re pretty cool, don’t you?!

finalmente! sai quando vuoi fare un progetto da tanto tempo, ma non lo fai mai? mio marito mi stava chiedendo una messenger bag, quel tipo di borsa a tracollo piatta a forma rettangolare, da un sacco di tempo, ma non sapevo mai quale tessuto usare. poi si è reso conto che avrebbe più bisogno di una versione più piccola del messenger bag per poter portare solo il portafoglio, le chiavi, il cellulare, ecc. gli ho fatto vedere le mie stoffe e ha anche scelto quelle che voleva per la sua borsa. ma ancora non la cucivo questa borsa. sono dell’opinione che, se non ti va di creare una cosa, c’è un motivo. in questo caso, perché dovevo cucire la borsa di mio marito da una vecchia camera d’aria di bicicletta.

finally! you know when you’ve wanted to do a project forever, but you never actually do it? my hubby had been asking me for a messenger bag for ages, but i was never really sure what fabric to use for it. then he realized that what he really needed was one of those smaller versions to carry around just his wallet, keys, phone, etc. i showed him all my fabric and he even chose which ones he wanted for his bag. but i still didn’t sew it. my opinion is, if you don’t really feel like making something, there’s a reason. in this case, it was because this bag was meant to be sewn from an old bicycle inner tube.

avevo visto diversi progetti fatti con le camere d’aria, ma ero un po’ spaventata perché la facevano sembrare una cosa molto complicato (e anche una cosa che rompe sia aghi che macchine per cucire).

i had seen a few projects sewn from inner tubes, but i was a bit worried about trying it myself because they always made it seem like something really complicated (not to mention something that breaks needles and sewing machines).

invece, non è stato per niente così. certo, non è stato come cucire il cotone e a volte la mia macchina saltava i punti, ma tutto sommato è andato bene. l’unico problema è stato il fatto che non avevo mai cucito una borsa così e l’ho fatto in un modo che non era quello più intelligente. ma quella è un’altra storia che non raccontiamo!

but it wasn’t like that at all. sure, it wasn’t like sewing quilting weight cotton and my machine did skip some stitches, but all things considered, it went pretty well. the only issue was that i had never sewn a bag like this and i didn’t go about it in the most intelligent way. but that’s another story.

allora, che fare? prendi una vecchia camera d’aria e aprila con i forbici in modo di avere un unico pezzo rettangolare lungo. poi la vorrai lavare con acqua e sapone perché sono piene di una polvere bianca (e sono zozzose in generale). è inutile cercare di togliere la piega della camera, perché non si può (ci ho provato!). perciò la mia borsa sembra a strisce. e poi…fa tutto quello che vuoi! io ho usato lo zig zag per unire i pezzi per farne uno più largo e poi per cucire i lati.

so, what do you do? take an old bike inner tube and cut it open so that you have one long rectangular piece. then you’ll want to wash that piece out with soap and water because these things are full of white powder (and they’re just gross in general). don’t even bother trying to flatten out the creases from the edges of the inner tube because it just won’t work (i tried!). that’s why my bag looks like it has stripes. and then…do whatever you want with your special “fabric”! i used a zig zag stitch to join the pieces to make one wider one and then to sew up the sides.

ho utilizzato una sola camera d’aria per la borsa e poi volevo usarne un’altra per il tracollo quando mi sono ricordata di qualcosa. l’anno scorso, quando abbiamo rottamato la nostra povera scassetta, mi sono fissata che volevo le cinture di sicurezza e le ho fatto tagliare. quindi il tracollo è una vecchia cintura di sicurezza.

i used one inner tube for the bag and then was about to use another one for the strap when i remembered something. last year, when we brought our poor old car to get junked, i became obsessed with the seat belts and insisted that they get cut out for me before destroying the car. so i used an old seat belt for the strap.

sono piuttosto contenta con il risultato. con oggetti completamente riciclati, mio marito ha una borsa perfetta per i suoi bisogni che è assolutamente unica. sembra quasi come una specie di pelle. la prossima cosa che vorrei fare…un portafoglio fatto dalla camera d’aria. vedremo!

i’m pretty happy with the end result. from completely upcycled materials, my husband has a bag just right for his needs that is absolutely unique. it looks and feels like some sort of weird leather. the next thing i want to try…a wallet made from an inner tube. we’ll see what happens!

come ho scritto in precedenza, ho partecipato allo swap di laura “tutti a tavola.” ieri mi è arrivato il mio pacco da anto (alias iris 19).

as i wrote before, i participated in laura’s swap “tutti a tavola.” yesterday my package from anto (aka iris 19) arrived.

mamma mia, quante cose! una candellina a girasole, due ricette (sono molto curiosa di provare quella per le patate alla parmigiana, essendo golosa di patate!) e un biglietto carino. dentro i tre pacchetti…

wow, so many things! a little sunflower candle, two recipes (i’m quite curious to try the potatoes alla parmigiana, being a lover of potatoes!) and a cute note. inside the three little packages…

…un grembiule, uno di quei cucchiai di legno piatti (non so come si chiama!) con una pannocchia di mais sopra (siamo grandi consumatori di mais a casa nostra) e, la parte che preferisco, 6 porta tovagliolini fatti a mano da lei!

…an apron, one of those flat wooden spoons (what are those things called?!) with a cob of corn on top (and we just love corn in our household) and, my favorite, 6 napkin rings that she made!

oramai a casa nostra non si usano più i tovagliolini di carta, quindi questi sono perfetti! mia figlia ci vuole sempre cambiare porta tovagliolini in continuazione, quindi possiamo sempre usarne altri. grazie mille, anto!

due set di 6 sottobicchieri fatti (da me) con foglio lavagna in modo che si può scrivere con i gessetti il nome del bicchiere (o posto a tavola) della persona. si sa che alle feste o cene i bicchieri si scambiano molto facilmente! e poi un biglietto con un acquarello che ha fatto mia figlia (“impronte di uccellino”).

two sets of 6 coasters made (by me, of course) with chalk cloth so you can write the name of the person on it with chalk. everyone knows that all the glasses get mixed up pretty easily at parties or dinners! or they can be used to mark people’s places at the table. and a little card with a watercolor my little girl did (“bird footprints”).

insomma, è molto carino partecipare agli swap!

and so, lesson learned: participating in swaps is pretty fun!

beneficienza: il dono dei giorni “persi” - charity: giving back those “lost” days

l’aprile scorso, mi sono embarcata in un’iniziativa molto interessante, cioè la donazione di assorbenti lavabili a ragazze e donne in paesi in via di sviluppo. senza libero accesso a questo tipo di prodotto, donne di queste zone sono costrette ad usare la corteccia o le foglie di alberi o giornali per assorbire il sangue mestruale o addirittura inseriscono l’argilla nella vagina per bloccare il flusso di sangue. non c’è bisogno di dire che queste materiali non solo non sono sufficienti a gestire le mestruazioni, ma causano molto spesso infezioni. per non parlare del fatto che spesso diventa difficile che possano frequentare la scuola o lavorare per diversi giorni ogni mese e può diventare una esperienza umiliante.

last april i became part of a very interesting initiative, that is the donation of cloth menstrual pads to girls and women in developing countries. without any access to such products, women in these areas are forced to use tree bark and leaves and newspaper to soak up their menstrual blood, or even insert clay into their vaginas to deal with their periods. needless to say, these materials are neither efficient nor healthy and it’s very common to get infections from such practices, not to mention the fact that it often makes it impossible for them to attend school or work and can become a humiliating experience.

mi sembra una situazione davvero triste, ma per fortuna non è difficile aiutare. quindi ho cucito molti assorbenti e li ho messi “in vendita” nel mio negozio di miss hobby con un prezzo ridotto per coprire il costo della spedizione dell’assorbente in africa. io, invece, offro i tessuti e il lavoro. gli assorbenti poi vengono spediti direttamente dal venditore alla organizzazione di benificienza. chi paga questi oggetti in donazione NON RICEVE NIENTE, a parte la conoscenza che hanno aiutato almeno una donna in bisogno di un modo igienico di gestire le mestruazioni, quindi aiutandola ad evitare malattie e assense dalla scuola o il lavoro. e non mi sembra poco! guardate le faccie delle ragazze che hanno ricevuto dei kit mestruali nella foto sopra!

it’s a really terrible situation, but luckily it’s easy to help. so i’ve sewn up a bunch of cloth pads and put them up “for sale” in my miss hobby store with a reduced price to cover the shipping costs. i, on the other hand, offer the fabric and work. i will then mail the pads directly to the charitable organization. those who pay for these donation items DO NOT RECEIVE ANYTHING, besides the knowledge that they have helped at least one woman in need of a hygienic way of managing her menstrual period, thereby helping her avoid illness and absence from school or work. and that’s a lot! just look at the faces of the girls who have received their menstrual kits in the photo above!

quando ho deciso di partecipare la primavera scorsa, ho scelto l’organizzazione sister hope. quando ho preparato il pacco da spedire, però, ho saputo che non ne avevano più bisogno perché avevano iniziato una collaborazione con un gruppo in africa che produce gli assorbenti. quindi ora li invierò a the shanti uganda society. in sanskrit, shanti vuol dire “pace.” shanti uganda è una organizzazione che fornisce la formazione di adulti, molti delle quali sono sieropositivi, di creare oggetti artigianali o aiuto economico per la loro istruzione. forniscono anche servizi medicali, soprattutto per donne incinte, e lezioni di yoga. in più, offrono dei workshop per ragazze e donne per informarsi sulla loro salute, il sesso, l’AIDS e la mestruazione, donando a ciascuna un kit mestruale.

when i decided to participate last spring, i chose the organization sister hope. however, when i was preparing the package to send, i found out that they didn’t need cloth pads anymore because they’d started a collaboration with a group producing pads in africa. so now i will send them to the shanti uganda society. in sanskrit, shanti means “peace.” shanti uganda is an organization which trains adults, many of whom are HIV+, to create handmade items or provide tuition for their education. they also provide medical services, especially for pregnant women, and yoga lessons for personal empowerment. they also offer workshops for girls and women to discuss health, safe sex, AIDS and menstruation, giving each a menstrual kit.

se l’iniziativa ti interessa, va a dare un’occhiata al mio negozio e forse ti andrà anche a commissionare qualche assorbente. per il costo di un paio di caffè al bar, si può aiutare una ragazza ad andare a scuola o una donna a lavorare, cose che per noi sono normalissime e scontate. poi, ricordiamo che un solo assorbente lavabile la aiuterà tanti giorni perché si può riutilizzare per anni!
anche se non ti va di commissionare niente, perché non spargere la parola? scrivici sul tuo blog e cerchiamo di aiutare più donne possibile!

if you are interested in helping out, go take a look at my store and perhaps you’ll decide to commission a pad or two. for the cost of a couple of coffees (or just one, if you’re in the united states), you can help a girl go to school or a woman to work, things which are totally normal for us and we take for granted. then, remember that just one cloth pad will help her many days because it can be reused for years!

even if you don’t want to commission anything right now, why not spread the word? write about this initiative on your blog and let’s try to help as many women as possible!

come ho scritto la settimana scorsa, ho partecipato allo swap di laura. il mio primo swap, che emozione! sono stata abbinata con maria, ed ecco il pacchetto pronto per la spedizione (ovviamente sul pacco si leggono gli indirizzi. non mi sembrava il caso di pubblicarli per tutto il mondo da vedere. va be’, sappiamo che mica tutto il mondo legge questo blog…figuriamoci!… ma avete capito che voglio dire.). il pacchetto esterno è abbastanza brutto in quanto rigorosamente da materiali recuperati e riutilizzati, ma il contenuto è più carino, o almeno spero che maria lo troverà così! vi farò vedere dopo che lo riceve perché non vorrei rovinarle la sorpresa.

as i wrote last week, i participated in laura’s swap. my first swap, how exciting! i was put together with maria, and here’s her package all ready to be sent out (obviously the addresses are legible on the package. it didn’t seem particularly intelligent to publish them for the whole world to see. not that the whole world reads this blog…as if!…but you get what i mean.). the outside package is pretty ugly seeing as i always do my best to upcycle and reuse all materials possible, but the contents are much nicer, or at least i hope maria will think so! i’ll show you what’s inside after she gets it because i don’t want to ruin her surprise.

altre notizie? stamattina ho comprato un melone. non vedo l’ora di usare i semi per cercare di creare una meraviglia come queste collane bellissime. sto anche per imbarcare nell’avventura di cucire vecchie camere d’aria di bicicletta per creare qualcosa di nuovo. spero tanto che mi esce qualcosa di decente!

ok, confesso che questi elastici non sono una mia invenzione. ne ho comprato due coppie da un paio di ragazze che vendevano asciugamani e altri tessili fatti da tessuti biologici ai mercati ragnatela dove esibivo le mie cose fino a quando sono rimasta incinta e non riuscivo più a seguire le cose come prima. ma mi ricordavo dei bottoni sul premio che ho vinto da beta, rivestiti da stoffa con questa tecnica che ha spiegato bene elena fiore. quindi ho deciso di provarci io, ma purtroppo non ho più modo di ritrovare queste ragazze per darle il credito per questa idea.

ok, so i admit that i didn’t come up with this idea. i bought two pairs from a couple of girls who sold towels and other sewn things made from organic fabrics at the ragnatela market where i used to exhibit my things until i got pregnant and just couldn’t handle it anymore. but i remembered the buttons on the prize i won from beta, covered with fabric with the technique that elena fiore explained. so i decided to give it a try myself, but unfortunately i don’t have any way of finding those girls again to give them the credit for this idea.

è facilissimo. bisogna usare l’attrezzo per rivestire i bottoni (ho usato questo) e comprare dei bottoni da rivestire (ho usato questi). seguendo le istruzioni sul retro della confezione (o quelle di elena fiore), copri i bottoni con la tua stoffa preferito. questi elastici, essendo un regalino per il 4° compleanno della mia piccina, non potevano essere di qualcosa che non c’entrava hello kitty. (per fortuna, ho trovato questa stoffa ad un mercato e l’ho usato per un sacco di cose per lei.) questi bottoni funzionano benissimo, ma devo dire che quelli che hanno usato le ragazze da cui ho avuto l’idea avevano dei bottoni con un retro molto migliore, che sembravano meno fai da te. qualcuno di voi ha idea dove ne posso comprare di questo tipo di bottone che è diverso sul retro?

it’s really easy. you need to use one of those gadgets for covering buttons (i used this one) and buy some buttons to cover (i used these). following the instructions on the back of the package (or elena fiore’s) cover the buttons with your favorite fabric. these elastics, being a gift for my little girl’s 4th birthday, couldn’t be anything besides hello kitty. (thank goodness i found this fabric at a market, because i’ve used it for a ton of things for her.) these buttons work perfectly well, but i must say that the ones those girls at the market used looked much better on the back, much less “do it yourself.” do any of you have any ideas of where to get this type of button that looks nicer on the back?

poi si aggiunge un cerchio di elastico (ho usato un cordino bianco di 1,8mm tipo questo). ho fatto un doppio nodo e poi ho messo un po’ di super attack per renderlo ancora più forte.

then you add an elastic (i used a 1.8 mm white elastic cord, like this). i did a double knot and put some super glue on the knot to make it even stronger.
